James Leslie Schlichting passed away Wednesday, November 12 th 2025, at age 83. His passing came in the early morning at Tender Hearts Assisted Living in Green Bay. He was born October 17 th 1942, in Little Falls MN to the late Carl and Adelle (Saulter) Schlichting.

A true sportsman, James built a life around hunting, fishing and his family. He loved every bit of Wisconsin’s wild beauty, whether trolling the early summer mornings for salmon and lake trout on Lake Michigan, or standing alert in a tree blind on a crisp fall day in the swamp listening for whitetails. Nature is where he felt most at peace. At home James tended his gardens, planted trees, canned the fruits and veggies he sowed, all the fruits of his outdoor labors, including his delicious canned salmon. He loved cooking and made his famous venison jerky sticks and, fresh fish and venison meats. James loved his wife, his sons and their wives, and his grandchildren. He enjoyed watching great movies and listening to Country music like Dolly Parton and Johnny Cash and, relaxing in the evenings with his wife and beloved pets. He loved animals. He liked watching the Packers and listening to the Brewers. He set up feeders outside the window to feed the birds and squirrels. Inside this rugged, nature-loving outdoorsman lived a generous heart. He never missed a chance to brighten someone’s day with a gift of flowers or simply a gift. Within this kindness James touched many lives.

He will be forever missed and remembered by his children: Scott and Matthew (Laurie) Schlichting; grandchildren Kira, and Kort (Hannah) Schlichting who are expecting James’s first great grandchild, a boy. James’s siblings: Jeannie (Larry) Cottew; Loraine (Frank) Benson; Paul (Diane) Schlichting, Kate (Dave) Eckman, and his youngest sister Julie Brill. He was preceded in death by his wife, Suzanne Schliching, parents Carl and Adelle Schlichting and brothers: Bobby, Larry and Charlie Schlichting.

A memorial service will be held at 5:00 pm on Friday, November 21st, 2025 at Verkuilen Van Deurzen Family Funeral Home, 2401 Fieldcrest Drive in Kaukauna. Visitation will take place at the funeral home on Friday from 3:00 pm until the time of service.

We wish to thank Nancy from Visiting Angels for her time. She made meals and helped James while he was home. Also, the caregivers at Tender Hearts for the care and support he received after he left the hospital and the nurses at St. Croix hospice for providing care and comfort during his final days.
