It is with deep love and gratitude that the family of Alan David Speed announces his peaceful passing on November 12, 2025. Born in Tarrytown, New York, on August 8, 1939, Alan lived a long and meaningful life shaped by creativity, loyalty, and an abiding devotion to the people he loved.

Alan was a proud graduate of Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, where he earned his degree in Architecture—an education that nurtured his lifelong appreciation for structure, craftsmanship, and thoughtful design. Over the course of his career, he approached every project with care, precision, and the quiet artistry that defined him. That same sense of craftsmanship found expression in his personal pursuits as well: he was a talented artist, ship-model builder and an avid model-train enthusiast, a passion inspired in part by his family’s ties to New York’s Grand Central Railway. His detailed models, lovingly created over the years, remain treasured keepsakes among his family.

While Alan took great pride in his work and his craft, nothing brought him more joy than his family. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who rarely missed a milestone or moment. He took special delight in the accomplishments of his wife, Denise, and spoke often—and with great pride—of her success, her talents, and the life they built together. Whether cheering from the sidelines at a sporting event, applauding at a dance or theater performance, or visiting his children and grandchildren across the country, Alan was always fully present—generous with his time, his warmth, and his unwavering support. He and Denise also shared a love of travel, especially their memorable trips throughout Europe.

Alan is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Denise J. Speed of Vernon Hills, IL; his children, Lauri (Gordon) Boulger of The Woodlands, TX and Craig (Theresa) Speed of Chicago, IL; his brother, Lucius “Lou” Speed of New Jersey; and his four cherished grandchildren: Lauren Elizabeth Boulger of Houston, Texas, Brandon Gordon Boulger of The Woodlands, Texas, Paige Johnson Speed, Second Lieutenant, U.S. Army, currently stationed at Fort Sill, Oklahoma and Caroline MacPherson Speed of Los Angeles, California. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lucius Speed and Velma (Cole) Speed.

Those who knew Alan will remember him for his gentle humor, his steadfast loyalty, and the open, supportive way he made those around him feel valued and loved. He carried himself with a quiet integrity and dignity that left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to share in his life.

A private gathering for immediate family will be held to honor Alan’s memory with a celebration of his life will take place over Thanksgiving weekend, when his family will come together to reflect, remember, and celebrate the extraordinary man they were privileged to call husband, father, and grandfather.

In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations in Alan’s memory to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, a cause he and Denise proudly supported.
