Born to Rosa and Foster Herring, in Bug Hill, NC, Billy grew up on the military base at Fort Bragg. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in History from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Following his graduation, he served as a Naval Officer from 1956 to 1960. He then answered the call to ministry and attended Union Presbyterian Seminary, where he received his Master of Divinity degree. Billy embarked on a long and faithful career as a Presbyterian minister, serving the congregations of Godwin, McMillan, and Erwin Presbyterian Churches. He touched countless lives through his sermons, pastoral care, and unwavering commitment to his faith.
Beyond the pulpit, Billy was a vital part of his community. He was an active civic leader, serving as a Boy Scout leader, PTA President, and Mayor of Godwin. In more recent years, he remained engaged as an active member of First Presbyterian Church of Fayetteville and the Fayetteville Rose Society.
Billy was devoted to his beloved wife, Olivia Herring, and his family. He is survived by Olivia, his children: Mary (Charles) Parker of Mebane, Ashley (Jonathan) Marx of Durham, and Will (Cara) Herring of Southern Pines; his brother, H. Dewey (Allie) Herring of Concord, and his seven grandchildren: Andrew, Catherine, and Margaret Parker; Evelyn and Phillip Marx; Rebekah and Addisyn Herring, and numerous nephews and nieces. He is preceded in death by siblings J.W. Herring, Eula Mae Walker, and Rosa Horne.
A private graveside service for the family will be held on Sunday, November 16, 2025, followed by a memorial service in the Chapel of First Presbyterian Church of Fayetteville on Sunday the 23rd. The family will receive guests at the church beginning at 2:00 PM, with the service to follow at 3:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to First Presbyterian Church of Fayetteville or Smile Train.
