Larry Craig Lafrentz Obituary

Larry Craig Lafrentz, devoted husband, father, grandfather, lifelong educator, and coach, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Wednesday, November 12, 2025, at the age of 71 in Regina, Saskatchewan.

Born in Estevan, Saskatchewan, Larry attended Immaculate Heart High School before graduating from Estevan Collegiate. He went on to earn his education degree from the University of Regina, beginning a career that would impact the lives of countless students, athletes, and colleagues over more than three decades.

Larry began teaching in 1976 at Gull Lake High School, where he taught, coached, and inspired student athletes for 14 years. In 1980, Larry married the love of his life Sherri Service where they began their family in Gull Lake, Saskatchewan. In 1990, Larry’s passion for sport and education led him to Regina, Saskatchewan with his family to serve as a Director with the Saskatchewan High Schools Athletic Association (SHSAA), a role he held with pride and commitment until his retirement in 2008. In that position, Larry became a guiding voice for school athletics across the province, helping to shape the experience of thousands of young athletes and the teachers and coaches who supported them. He believed deeply in the power of athletics to build character, community, and lifelong friendships.

Larry will be remembered not only for his leadership and love of sport, but also for his warmth, humor, and generous spirit. He cherished time with his family and friends, often found cheering on the sidelines of his grandchildren’s activities, at the golf course or volunteering in his community.

Larry is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Sherri Lafrentz; daughter Lacy (Matt) Gibson and their children Emery and Nora; son Byron (Stephanie) Lafrentz and their children Lyla and Luka. He is also survived by his siblings Danny (Shirley) Lafrentz, Joan (Gary) Anderson, Kelly (Arlene) Lafrentz, Darren (Noella) Lafrentz, Janine (Jeff) Carlisle; parents-in-law Don and Roberta Service; brother-in-law Brad (Maryan) Service; and sister-in-law Deanna Service (Heath Wilson); as well as numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. Larry was predeceased by daughter Lara Lafrentz and his parents Lawrence and Laura Lafrentz.

As one colleague reflected, “Larry lived for helping others succeed. He made the world of school sports a better place—and made all of us better for knowing him.”
