Evelyn Lucille Marcus Obituary

With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Evelyn Lucille Marcus (Mattas), who left this world peacefully and comfortably at home on November 12, 2025, surrounded by loved ones and held by her daughter. She was 65 years old.

Born on November 5, 1960, in Chicago, Evelyn grew up with a bright spirit, a fierce independence, and a deep love for family that followed her throughout her life. She dedicated herself to learning and personal growth, completing some college before building a career marked by versatility, drive, and compassion. Over the years, she flourished as a paralegal, a real estate agent, and in human resources, roles in which she touched countless lives with her professionalism, warmth, and integrity.

Evelyn was a devoted mother to her daughter, Taylor Mary Marcus, who was the center of her world. Their bond was one of unconditional love, strength, and mutual admiration. Evelyn’s joy expanded even further when she became a Nonna. She adored her grandchildren—Carson Charles Marcus, who preceded her in death at age 4, and Lyla Sophia Caudle, age 2, who brought her immeasurable happiness and light.

She shared a beautiful life and marriage with her beloved husband, Steven Roy Marcus, who passed away at 66. The thought of their reunion brings comfort to the many who loved her.

Evelyn is preceded in death by her parents, John and Mary Mattas (Padgen); her husband, Steven; her grandson, Carson; and her sisters, Sharron Buckmeier and Crystal Malak. She is survived by her daughter Taylor, her granddaughter Lyla, her brother William Greenaberg (Archie), and a large extended family who cherished her deeply, including her nieces and nephews: William Greenaburg, William Malak, Allan Buckmeier, Tina Cooper, Kimberly Reinhart, Robin Knezivich, Holly Rex, and Stacie Gallagher, along with many great-nieces and great-nephews.

Evelyn’s life was a testament to resilience, love, and unwavering loyalty. She faced challenges with courage, celebrated joys with gratitude, and made every person she met feel valued. Her presence brought comfort, her laughter brought warmth, and her love will continue to guide her family for the rest of their lives.

Evelyn deeply loved her family, and the many friends who became family throughout her life. She will be missed by countless people whose lives she touched in her short 65 years. Among her dearest were Deborah and Mark Gilly, friends she and Steven met on their honeymoon who remained only ever a phone call away. Together they shared decades of cruises, vacations, celebrations, and supported one another through the hardest moments of illness and loss. Their bond became one built not by blood, but by unwavering love and loyalty. Evelyn was also cherished by Sandra and Adam Provo, who entered her life through Taylor’s daycare and quickly became inseparable as their daughters grew into chosen sisters over 26 years. The Provos stood by Evelyn’s side through every chapter helping with childcare, supporting Taylor through Carson’s illness, bringing meals during times of grief, decorating for holidays when tradition mattered most, and stepping in when Evelyn’s health declined. These friendships, along with many others who became extended family over the years, brought immense comfort, joy, and strength to Evelyn’s life. She will be truly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Her family takes solace in knowing she is at peace free from pain, surrounded by the loved ones who journeyed before her, and watching over those she leaves behind with the same gentle heart she carried every day.
