January 9, 1944 – Zungoli, Avellino, Italy
November 12, 2025 – Calgary, Alberta
Josie Dowling of Calgary, AB, passed away on Wednesday, November 12, 2025, at the age of 81 years.
Giuseppina (Josie) was born on January 9, 1944, in Zungoli, Avellino, Italy. She was the eldest daughter of Concetta and Vincenzo Annicchiarico. In 1955, the family immigrated to Canada and settled in Edmonton, AB. Josie was the eldest sister to four loving siblings: Agostino, Giovanna, Raffaela, and Julian.
After graduating from St. Joseph Catholic High School in Edmonton, Josie began a long and dedicated career in banking. It was during this time that she met and married Bruce Dunlop, the father of her three children—Lisa, Jamieson, and Laurel. After moving to Calgary, Josie embraced both family and community life. She was active in the North Glenmore community and played an important role in establishing the neighbourhood preschool. She also worked evenings at Calgary’s Stampede Park track, home to Thoroughbred and Standardbred racing for many years.
Josie was known for her energy and her love of keeping busy. She filled her days with creativity and care—nurturing her children, crafting, sewing, exercising, gardening, cooking, and canning. Her quiet demeanour, paired with her quirky sense of humour and perfectly timed one-liners, made her unforgettable.
True to her adventurous spirit, Josie also spent twenty years in British Columbia, living in both Campbell River, and North Vancouver. She continued her work with BMO while also running a fish shop in North Vancouver with her second husband, Walter Dowling. Together, they enjoyed countless fishing trips and explored the coastal beauty of the archipelago of Haida Gwaii. She also spent special time with her son, Jamieson, who lived in Vancouver at the time.
She was a devoted bank teller for forty years. After retiring, she returned to Calgary, where she cherished time with her family and her young grandchildren—Siena, Gabriel, Jayden, and Cayle. She made new friendships and reconnected with old neighbours, continuing to engage in the lives of those around her.
Josie found joy in simple pleasures: a homemade meal, a drive in the countryside, a trip to the mall, a walk in the park, a family picnic, and getting out on the ocean. She was present for many celebrations with friends and families—holidays, birthdays, and themed gatherings—each one adding to the treasured memories she leaves behind. She is deeply loved, and her presence remains a part of all who knew her.
She is survived by her daughters, Lisa Dunlop (Rob) and Laurel Taylor (Jason); her son, Jamieson Dunlop (John); her sisters, Giovanna (Joan) Falcone (Franco) and Raffaela (Lina) Urso (Sandro); and her brothers, Agostino Annicchiarico (Jacqueline) and Julian Annicchiarico (Bonnie). She is also lovingly remembered by her nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Funeral Services will be held at McInnis & Holloway (Fish Creek, 14441 Bannister Road SE, Calgary, AB) on Sunday, November 23, 2025 at 2:30 p.m. Reception to follow in the Hospitality Centre at the Funeral Home.
