It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Nannie, who departed this life peacefully on November 12, 2025, at home surrounded by her loving family. Ms. Gladys was cherished by family, friends, and all who had the privilege to know her. Her legacy endures through the kindness, wisdom, and love she shared with her family and the world.
Born on August 25, 1937, in Forrest City, Arkansas, Ms. Gladys was the daughter of John & Emma Higgins. Raised in a loving home, Nannie grew up surrounded by family and developed a lifelong appreciation for family traditions. She later married Russell McKnight with whom they shared 58 wonderful years, building a home filled with warmth, laughter, and support.
Ms. Gladys and Mr. Russell traveled for the first few years of their marriage going to many states and countries while he worked construction before returning to Gadsden, TN. On a small farm they built a loving home. Ms. Gladys was known for her dedication and excellence in her professional life. She worked as a Medical Lab Technician manager for over 40 years at Gibson General and Humboldt General Hospitals. She left a lasting impact on colleagues and clients alike. Her compassion and commitment to her profession was evident in the many achievements and respect she earned throughout her career.
Beyond work, Nannie was deeply involved in her community and church, always lending a helping hand to those in need. Her passions included her grand and great grandchildren, and she took great joy in sharing their exploits with others, inspiring countless friends and neighbors.
Ms. Gladys is survived by daughters, Dianne McKee, Sheila Carlton (Bob), Cindi Thompson (Barry), and sons Rusty McKnight (Lisa) and Ben McKnight (Leighann). Her grandchildren, Russ Tally, Adam Carlton (Jacqueline), John Carlton (Miranda), Brody Thompson (Lacey), and Nicholas McKnight. Her great grandchildren, Isla Carlton, Evie Carlton, Silas Carlton, Wrenley Carlton, Bryce Carlton, Sutton Carlton, Cayden Campbell, Eli Thurmond, Laynie Thurmond, Emmie Thompson, Weston Thompson, Chelesa McKnight, and Trevor McKnight. Sisters Donna Davis, Betty Higgins, and brother Herman Higgins, as well as many nieces and nephews who will continue to honor her
memory and uphold the values she instilled.
Ms. McKnight was preceded in death by her husband, Russell McKnight, her parents John and Emma Higgins, her brother, TJ Higgins and nephew, John Higgins.
Visitation with the McKnight family will be held Saturday, November 15, 2025, from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. with the celebration of life to follow to follow at First Baptist Church in Gadsden. Family and friends are invited to gather and celebrate Ms. McKnight's remarkable life.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to First Baptist Church, Gadsden.
