Blossvale/Boonville, NY - Beloved patriarch of the Bigelow family, Brayton Jay Bigelow Sr, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 12, 2025, at the age of 86. He was married to Joan Alberico in 1959 and together they raised four children. Brayton graduated from UFA and immediately enlisted in the U.S. Navy after graduating, he served on the USS Mitchell for two years. After his discharge from the Navy, he enjoyed a 32-year career as a U.S. postal carrier, during which he touched the lives of many who were privileged to have him as their letter carrier. He also completed auctioneering school in Iowa in 1972 and became well known as an accomplished auctioneer and antique dealer. He enjoyed buying and selling cars and had a particular passion for antique vehicles. After his retirement from the USPS, Brayton began a second, 15-year career as a bus driver for the Adirondack School System, where he quickly became endeared to both his young riders and their parents, all of whom fondly referred to him by his nickname "Bam Bam". Brayton spent most of his later retirement years living at his "happy place" on Little Long Lake in Woodgate, a life-long passion that was passed on to his children and grandchildren. Brayton was a devoted and fun-loving father and grandfather.
He leaves behind a large and enduring legacy – a son Brayton II (Ann) of Delaware; two daughters, Mary Lourdes (Ron) McHarris of Blossvale, and Marcia Antonello of Island Park, 16 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and his dear companion, Helen Rieben of Booneville. He is preceded in death by a son, Brett Bigelow.
In keeping with Mr. Bigelow’s wishes there will be no public services.
Arrangements are under the care of Adrean Funeral Service, Inc., Utica, NY.
