Bernard P Dolan Obituary

Bernard “PopPop” Dolan, 86, of Red Hook, NY, passed away peacefully at home on November 12, 2025, surrounded by his devoted family.

Born on July 4, 1939, in the Bronx, Bernard was the eldest of eight. A proud Marine, devoted husband, and man of deep faith, he lived honestly and compassionately, dedicated always to his family and to God.

For over 66 years, Bernard was married to the love of his life, Joan, with whom he built a beautiful life filled with laughter, strength, and love. Together, they raised their family with values that reflected who he was: faithful, fair, kind, and giving. He worked tirelessly, commuting each day into the city to provide the best life possible for those he loved—never complaining and always giving more than he kept for himself.

Bernard was the proud father, grandfather, and great-grandfather of a large, close-knit family—four children, ten grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren—who lovingly called him PopPop. He was our anchor, our teacher, and our example of what it means to live a good and generous life.

Bernard’s love for sports and mentoring others was a defining part of his life. He devoted countless years to coaching basketball, swimming, and Little League—not only for his children but also for his grandchildren. His enthusiasm, patience, and guidance left a lasting impact on every one he coached.

Bernard also served his community with a generous spirit. Wherever he was living, he volunteered at his local parish including St. Christopher's in Red Hook. He also gave his time to St. John Vianney High School, where two of his children attended and was a proud member of the Knights of Columbus. His faith was not just a belief but a way of life that he lived through service, kindness, and humility.

He led by example, teaching that strength comes from faith, that kindness matters, and that family is everything. His wisdom lives on in the simple family philosophy we carry with us every day: “What would PopPop do?”

Those who knew him will remember his quiet strength, humor, logic, and heart. He never judged; he always listened and had a way of making everyone feel seen and loved.

Being born on the Fourth of July felt fitting—each year, as the fireworks lit the sky, we couldn’t help but think they were for him. And in truth, they always were.

Though words can never truly sum up such a remarkable life, Bernard’s legacy will continue to shine through the family he built, the love he gave, and the faith he lived. We will take care of one another, as he always taught us to do, even as we feel the deep ache of his absence.

We are forever grateful for the life of our beloved PopPop—husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, coach, and friend. We will carry him with us always.
