Calvin C. Downen Obituary
Calvin C. Downen, 57, of Rapid City, died at his home, Wednesday, December 22, 2010. Calvin was born September 3, 1953 in Rapid City to Warren and Betty (Kennedy) Downen. He graduated from Stevens High School in 1970 and attended Springfield Technical College. Calvin began working with his father in the family business, Downen Drilling and Repair, waterwell drilling and repair. Working with his father, Calvin became a self made mechanic. He was a member of the S.D. Waterwell Drillers Association He loved music, singing, playing the guitar and banjo and was a certified scuba diver. Calvin religiously participated in the annual Blues Festival and Competition at Windfield, Kansas every fall. Calvin was proud to be in his 17th year of sobriety, an active member of the Alano Club serving as an officer. Survivors include his mother, Betty Downen, Rapid City, a brother, Stephen Downen and his wife, Dian, Arvada, CO., his two sisters; Elicia Reed and her husband, Roy, Thornton, CO. and Inez Rankin, and her husband, Richard, Rapid City and multiple nieces, nephews great nieces and great nephews. A Celebration of Life Memorial service will be held 3:00 pm, Wednesday, December 29, 2010 at Edstrom & Rooks Funeral Service, Serenity Springs Chapel of Tranquility with Pastor Eric Grinager officiating. Inurnment will be at a later time at Pine Lawn Memorial Park. A memorial has been established to the Alano Club.
