Lawrence “Larry” Matthew Byrnes Jr.
December 11, 1943 – October 6, 2025
Lawrence “Larry” Matthew Byrnes Jr., 81, passed away peacefully on October 6, 2025, in Louisville, Kentucky, likely with a story—and definitely a punchline—still on the tip of his tongue.
Born in Bardstown, Kentucky, on December 11, 1943, Larry was the first of sixteen children born to Lawrence Matthew Byrnes Sr. and Mary Agnus (Tong) Byrnes. From an early age, he learned the value of hard work, faith, and finding humor in every situation—skills that served him well throughout his life.
Larry proudly served his country in the United States Air Force for 22 years, including three tours in Vietnam from 1964 to 1967, followed by 17 additional years as a civil servant for the U.S. Army at Fort Knox, working in the finance department. Never one to sit still, he also ran his own business, Zion Enterprise, a true entrepreneur through and through.
A master woodworker, avid hunter, and dedicated member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Larry lived a life of faith and service. His years of involvement with the Boy Scouts of America were among his greatest joys—mentoring, camping, teaching, and occasionally (or often) cracking jokes around the campfire. Every campout throughout his life was made better by his famous Dutch oven peach cobbler, cooked to perfection and served with a smile.
Larry was known for his quick wit and tall tales—favorites included the “falling rock” story and the “woman in the Corvette.” He brought laughter wherever he went.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Sherryl (Ramsay) Byrnes; his children Mark, Rebekah, LeGrande, David, and Nathan; 13 grandchildren; and 3 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a host of extended family and friends.
A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, October 14th, at 1:30 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Tunnel to Towers (T2T) or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, two causes that were close to his heart.
And in true Larry fashion—next time you’re gathered around a campfire, share a story, roast a marshmallow, and don’t forget to laugh.
