Renald Maceo Wells, Sr., born on May 13, 1970 to the late Bishop James C. Wells and Overseer Mother Bettye W. Wells in Selma, AL. Departed this life on September 29, 2025, at the age of 55. Renald was a man of deep faith, unwavering dedication, and profound love for his family and those he loved. All who knew him, knew him to be full of humor, love, and unwavering dedication.
A respected funeral director for many years, Renald served with distinction at Gus Thornhill Funeral Home in East Point, Georgia, where he was regarded as more than an employee; he was cherished as a family member by Mr. Gus Thornhill, Mrs. Annell Thornhill, and his colleagues Sherry, Mike, and Stacy. His career also included valued service at Aubrey Larkin’s Lewis Brothers Funeral Home in Selma, Alabama where he was regarded as a family member as well. Renald further demonstrated his commitment to helping others as he led recovery efforts for FEMA during the Hurricane Katrina catastrophe in New Orleans, LA.
Renald was a proud 1988 graduate of Selma High School. He was an active member of the Pride of Alabama Elks Lodge #1170 and a member of St. Mark #4 Masonic Lodge. He served his country as a soldier in the United States Army.
His spiritual foundation was rooted in the Holiness Temple Church of Christ in Prayer #1, where he was born and baptized under the pastoral leadership of his late father, Bishop James C. Wells. Renald also served as a sergeant at arms for the church.
An immensely talented musician, Renald shared his talent with numerous gospel groups and congregations throughout his life. He played for Greater St. Paul Baptist Church of Atlanta, GA, Mt. Neriah Baptist Church of Atlanta, GA, Good Hope Baptist Church of Sardis, AL, Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church of Selma, AL, and Freedom Baptist Church of Selma.
Renald is preceded in death by his beloved parents, Bishop James C. Wells and Overseer Mother Bettye W. Wells, and his cherished sister, Ms. Loretta “Jackie” Wells.
He leaves to cherish his memory his loving and dedicated companion of many years, Kristi Shepherd, and his treasured children: his daughter ReNari P. Wells and sons Nolan R. Wells, Renald M. Wells, Jr., and Gus T. Wells, all of Selma, AL. Renald is also survived by his brother and best friend, Bishop Reginald (Dr. Renee) Wells, Sr., his loving sister Mother Sabrina Wells, and his brother-cousin Reverend Johnny (Mary Ann) Wells. His legacy continues through his nephews Dacious Dickerson, Sr., Reginald Wells, Jr., and James Wells; nieces Keturah Wells and Jada Wells; great-nephews Aiden Dickerson and Dacious “DJ”Dickerson, Jr.; and great-nieces Faith Dickerson, Jaylah Dickerson, and Aniyah Dickerson as well as numerous cousins, relatives, and friends whom he loved dearly will forever hold him in their hearts.
Renald Maceo Wells, Sr. will be remembered for his steadfast faith, his generous spirit, and the love he bestowed upon all who knew him.
Funeral services have been scheduled for Wednesday, October 8, 2025 at 1:00PM from the Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church. Interment will follow in the Serenity Memorial Gardens with Aubrey Larkin's Lewis Brothers Funeral Home of Selma serving with excellence through professional service.
Mr. Wells will lie in repose at Aubrey Larkin's Lewis Brothers on Tuesday, October 7, 2025 from 8:00AM-10:00AM and 4:00PM-8:00PM and at The Holiness Temple Church of Christ in Prayer #1 from 11:00AM-3:00PM.
