Woods- Elewyne “Sam” Woods, age 89, of Keystone Heights, Florida, passed away peacefully on September 4, 2025, at her residence with her loving family by her side. Sam was born in Loris, South Carolina on June 14, 1936, to the late Robert Earnest and Bessie Caroline Hughes Gause. Sam was raised in South Carolina on her family farm and graduated from Loris High School. Sam earned her associate’s degree from Coastal Carolina University and had a long successful career as a Certified Public Assistant. She had a gift with numbers and was able to fulfill her passion as well as assist many with their bookkeeping needs throughout the years. After many years of dedication to her profession, Sam retired in 1990. Sam was always very athletic. She played basketball in college, fast pitch softball for the City of Myrtle Beach, and years later she was taught golf by her best friend, Jerry. She resided in Myrtle Beach for years and after marrying Jerry William Woods in 1989, they purchased a 100-acre farm in Starke. Sam went back to her farming roots and tended to their chicken farm for years. Jerry and Sam shared many tee times, amazing memories, and were blessed with 33 beautiful years. More than anything, Sam loved her family and enjoyed spending precious time with them. She was preceded in death by her parents; loving husband, Jerry William Woods; brother, Bobby Gause; sister, Earnestine Gause; and granddaughter, Courtney Knight.
Sam is survived by her daughters, Lisa (Clint) Knight of Keystone Heights, FL and Denise Gunter of Columbia, SC; grandchildren, Gregory (Rachel) Gunter, Chip (Emilie) Jordan, A.J. Wooldridge, and Kimberly Overton; great grandchildren, Chloe (DJ) Wolfren and Lisa Marie Gunter; along with many extended family and friends.
A Celebration of Sam’s Life will be held on Thursday, September 11, 2025, at 1:00 pm at Archie Tanner Memorial Chapel with Chaplain Jim Cox officiating. The family will receive friends on Thursday, September 11, 2025, an hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Arrangements are under the care and direction of V.
