Bertha Evelyn Shockley Koeppen Mullin, 98, of Melba passed away Monday, June 17, 2019 at her daughter’s home. Bertha was born February 26, 1921 to Nathaniel and Lorena Belle Arnold Shockley on their homestead at Burmah, Idaho. She was one of nine children. Her grade school and high school years were spent in Burmah, Boise, and Richfield, Idaho where she graduated as valedictorian of her class of 1939 and was voted “The one most likely to succeed”. Bertha graduated from Willis Business College in Santa Monica, California in 1941 where she was a book keeper for a jewelry store and managed the Southern Counties Gas Co. of West Los Angeles where she managed the street file that kept a record of gas repairs, gas turned on and off. She worked these jobs until her marriage to Arthur Walter Koeppen on March 16, 1943 in the Little Church of the Flowers in Glendale, California. She returned to Idaho and they made their home in Gooding where Art farmed. Three children were born to them: Peggy Lee, William Fred and Beth Marie. They gave her six grandchildren: Jamie Zoe and Neil William Givens, Ronie Lee and Travis Shane Koeppen and Jon Michael and Seth Joseph Van Wassenhove. The Art Koeppen family moved from Gooding to Emmett, to Danners, Illinois and back to Emmett and then to Melba in 1954 where Art farmed. Bertha started nurse’s training in 1960 and graduated 1961 with the highest grade in the state that year. Bertha continued in the nursing profession until her retirement in 1986. Don Mullin and Bertha were married in 1963 in the Zion Lutheran Church and lived on Don’s farm. Don passed away in 1990. Bertha lived on the farm until her death. Bertha is survived by two daughters-Peggy Lee Forney and Beth Marie Wood; and son-in-law Terry Gene Wood; and her six grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren. A memorial services will be held at 2:00 PM, Friday, June 28, 2019 at the First United Presbyterian Church located at 400 Lake Lowell Ave in Nampa. Final arrangements by Zeyer Funeral Chapel, Nampa. 208-467-7300 In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in Bertha’s honor to the First United Presbyterian Church or the Melba Senior Center, 115 Base Line Rd, Melba, Idaho 83641.
