Richard Brawner Obituary

Richard Douglas Brawner, age 65, of Oswego, Illinois, passed away at home on August 26, 2025, with his family by his side. He spent his final days in the comfort of home, supported by the compassionate care of hospice.

Rich was known for his warmth, generosity, and quick wit. Fun-loving and humorous, he had a deep love of music, charming friends and family with his whimsical songs and rhymes. He also enjoyed spending time on the golf course, and watching classic westerns starring John Wayne, simple pleasures that brought him great joy. His kindness, giving nature, and zest for life left a lasting impression on all who knew him.

He enjoyed a distinguished career in the railroad industry that spanned more than 30 years. He began as an equipment mechanic and later transitioned into sales and service, traveling across the United States. Over the years, he served as a field engineer and instructor, sharing his expertise and mentoring others throughout his career.

Rich is survived by his wife, Karen (Baker); his children, Hannah and her husband Steven Greenwood, Maggie, and Benjamin; his granddaughter, Autumn Greenwood; and his sister, Rebecca, and her husband, Larry Slone and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Darlene Brawner, and his brothers, Rory and Charles Brawner.

A memorial open house will be held at the family’s home—325 Chicago Road, Oswego, IL 60543—on Sunday, August 31, from 1:00–5:00 PM for friends and family to gather, share stories, and celebrate his life.

Rich will always be remembered for his laughter, his music, his love of golf, and the love he shared so freely with all who knew him.
