Fred W. Simons Sr. Obituary
Fred W. Simons Sr., 78, of Avella passed away peacefully in his home on Wednesday morning, August 13, 2025, with his beloved wife by his side.
He was born on October 30, 1946, in Pittsburgh, PA son of the late Ray Otis Simons and Elizabeth Gwendolyn Miller Simons.
Fred was a 1964 graduate of Avella High School and was a United States Navy veteran, serving during Vietnam and was honorably discharged in 1969.
He was a mill worker for Dynamet in Washington for 40 years, retiring in 2013.
Fred was a member of Bert C. Siders American Legion Post 643 and the Polar Star Mutual Benefit Society both of Avella.
Fred loved gardening and canning, especially his famous “Uncle John’s Peppers”. He enjoyed fishing and spending time on “the hill” with family and friends. Fred cherished his time with his children and grandchildren and truly enjoyed all of the activities they did together, especially playing cards with his granddaughters.
On June 11, 1977, he married Melissa Rose Wales, who survives.
Surviving in addition to his wife of 48 years are his children, Travis (Jen) Simons of Jacksonville, FL, Sabrina Simons (Jake Colvin) of Salem, VA and Fred (Theresa) Simons Jr. of Triadelphia, WV; five grandchildren, Andrew, Phenix, Ellie, Abby and Patsy Ann; a sister, Sondra (the late Wayne) Wright of Columbus, OH; three brothers, Ronald (Vicki) Simons of Washington, PA, Donald (Judy) Simons of Tucson, AZ, and Alfred (Carla) Simons of Avella, PA; and several nieces and nephews.
Deceased in addition to his parents are four brothers, Ray O. Simons Jr., Charles D. Simons and Joseph D. Simons Sr. and Thomas N. Simons.
A memorial gathering will be held from 2pm-4pm on Saturday, October 25, 2025, in the Jerome A. Stefkovich Funeral Home Inc., 18 Campbell Street, Avella, PA 15312.
