Alvin W. Balchunas, 81, of Hanover, PA, entered God’s eternal care Monday, August 4, 2025, at home with his loving family by his side.
Born October 22, 1943, in Coal Township, PA, he was the son of the late William J. and Helen (Pavelczyk) Balchunas. Al was the loving husband of the late Barbara A. (Weglarz) Balchunas with whom he shared 53 years of marriage until her passing on July 11, 2022.
Al was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, Hanover, PA, and served on the parish council.
Al was a 1961 graduate of Coal Township High School, Shamokin, PA, and was an All-State basketball player. He received a BS in Business Education/Accounting from Bloomsburg State University in 1965. Al took many post-graduate and continuing education courses at Temple University, the University of Pennsylvania-Wharton School of Finance, Shippensburg State College, Pennsylvania State University, and the PA Department of Education.
Al retired from Conewago Valley School District in 2010, having worked as a substitute teacher, prior to that he worked for the Carroll County Government. Over the years he worked at Eastern York School District, serving as their business manager, school board secretary, and director of finance, maintenance, and cafeteria; at Pequea Valley School District, teaching and then as business manager; Mifflin County School District and South Middleton School District as the business manager; and an adult evening instructor in “Small Business Management” at the Lancaster Vo-Tech School.
Al was an honorable member in the Who’s Who in School Business Management in America as the “Youngest Business Manager in the State of Pennsylvania.” He was a member of the PA Assoc. of School Business Officials, the PA School Board Assoc., the PA Assoc. of School Board Administrators, the National Business Education Assoc., and secretary of the Salisbury Township Lions Club.
Al is survived by his daughter, Cathleen M. Bauerline and her husband Steven of McSherrystown, PA. He was preceded in death by a sister, Florence (Flo) Balchunas Chylak; and a brother, Norman J. Balchunas.
Following cremation, services will be private and at the convenience of the family.
