Ottar Allen ‘Al’ Flack
Al Flack passed away peacefully at the age of 94, after a long battle with Parkinson’s Disease, on Saturday, August 2, 2025.
Al was born in Starbuck, Minnesota on June 26, 1931 to Ottar and Helen (Nordberg) Flack.
He was a graduate of Starbuck High School and Concordia College.
During his senior year in college, he married Jean Baasen. They had four children and were married for nearly 71 years.
After teaching for a year in Middle River, MN he was drafted and served two years in the US Army, much of that time stationed in Germany.
Upon his return from service, Al attended graduate school at the University of Minnesota, and then taught in Evansville, MN for two years before moving to Staples where he taught high school math until his retirement in 1987. He also taught driver’s education and was the tickets sales manager for Staples High School athletics for many years. After retirement, Al and Jean moved to their lake home on Island Lake north of Park Rapids. In 2018, they moved to Crystal Brook Senior Living in Park Rapids.
Al was always active in church, in the choirs, on the council, as congregation president and in bible studies.
Other activities included Sons of Norway, Men’s Chorus (Staples), Classic Chorale (Park Rapids), fishing, wood working, and home improvement projects. He also enjoyed playing Bridge with friends and Cribbage with family. He was an avid Twins and Vikings fan.
Al was preceded in death by his wife Jean, his son Paul, his parents Ottar and Helen Flack, and his brother Chet Flack.
He is survived by son John (Jan) Flack, daughters Carol (Carl) Larson and Becky (Bryan) Lambrechts, 6 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, and a sister Karen Hammero.
Al’s kids would like to give a special thank you to the staff at Crystal Brook in Park Rapids, Green Pine Acres in Menahga, and St. Joseph’s Hospice for the excellent care they provided Al.
Celebration of Life service will be held at Peace Lutheran Church, Nevis on Saturday, August 9th at 1:00 PM with Pastor Linda Nicklason officiating. Visitation is for one hour prior to the service.
Inurnment will be held at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in Little Falls.
