Steven Harris Obituary

Steven Harris, 87, of Huntsville, passed away Thursday. Born in NY, NY to Alex and Ruth Klitzner Harris, Mr. Harris attended high school in NY where he graduated early at age 16 and chose to enlist in the US Army in 1945. He attended paratrooper school and was assigned to the US Army 11th Airborne Division, 127th Engineering Battalion. He served in the Philippines, Sendai, Japan and was discharged in Los Angeles, CA in 1947. Mr. Harris then attended The Stanford University on GI Bill receiving a degree in engineering. During his career from 1950-1991, he worked for TRW as an engineer and later as the Director of Marketing in Huntsville, AL. Steve contributed much to the aerospace industry taking his first assignment to work with Werner Von Brauns team to develop the Titan II Boost Vehicle. Later assignments included the Lunar excursion module descent engine, project HEAO and other unmanned orbit vehicles. Mr. Harris is predeceased by his wife, Katherine Engle Harris and son, Bruce Allen Harris. Survivors include sons, Jeffrey F. Halbstein-Harris (Carol Lolley-Harris) of Raleigh, NC and Alex J. Harris (Kelly) of Harvest, AL; and grandchildren, Rob and Rebecca Harris and Alex Willis. Visitation will be from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. Tuesday at Laughlin Service Funeral Home. A graveside service will follow at 11:30 a.m. at Maple Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Etz Chaim Congregation on Bailey Cove Road, Huntsville, AL.
