Elder Perkins Johnson Jr. went to his heavenly home in the early hours of Saturday July 12th at Northern Regional Hospital step down unit holding his daughter’s hand after a brief illness. Elder Perkins (June to the family) was born on December 23, 1931 to the late Perkins Johnson Sr. and Mildred Britt Johnson in Thurmond, WV, he was the 2nd child of 14. (11 girls and 3 boys). He graduated from Dubois High School in 1951 he served 2 years in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict, and worked as an orderly at Oak Hill Hospital for 20 plus years, later worked at Rowland Coal Mines for over 15 years. Elder Johnson was very passionate and deeply rooted in gospel music, taught himself to play lead guitar, formed a gospel group in the Army, later he established the Silver Tones of Harvey singing quartet. He served many capacities in the Church of God in Christ in Red Star, WV, was a deacon Chief Musician and ended up serving as pastor for numerous years, he also sang on local TV (WOAY) two times which for him was the highlight of his musical ministry. Giving of their time and love generously to all who got to know them, after the death of his wife Clara, he came from WV to reside with his daughter Leslie in Mt. Airy, NC for over 10 years. As his eyesight failed and wasn’t able to ambulate without assistance, he was lovingly cared for by his daughter, and Deacon David Gregg, Nicole Hawks, Marcia and Minister Brenda Reid, several nieces and spiritual daughters Mrs. Resse Billips, Talisha Grissom and Linda George.

Elder Johnson was a true Bible scholar, very knowledgeable of the word. His passion for serving God was unmatched, was always willing to help others, married a lot of couples in WV, he did not see color, he saw the heart, loved his family, especially the grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was a very flashy dresser (passed it on to his daughter) hats, shoes and suits had to be able to stand out, he continued to play his guitar until his eyesight failed him, he loved Sam Cooke ant the Soul Stirrus music.
