Peggy Jean Kenney Obituary

Peggy Jean Kenney, beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother passed away peacefully at the age of 85 on July 5th, 2025 in Boise, Idaho.

Peggy was born in Arkansas City, Kansas to Howard and Mary Morrissey on Oct 28th, 1939, and was the youngest of 3 children having two older brothers, Jimmy and Dean. She spent most of her childhood in Arlington, TX and graduated from Arlington High School. Peggy was the first person in her family to attend college, earning a B.S in Education from Oklahoma State University. While in college, she was a member of the Kappa Delta sorority and met her lifelong best friend, Barbara Miller.

Peggy met the love of her life Felton “Bud” Kenney while teaching elementary school in Sherman, TX. Bud was a U.S. Air Force fighter pilot, and they met at the Officer’s Club at Perrin Air Force Base. Peggy enjoyed being a military wife and even after Bud’s retirement they attended annual fighter squadron reunions.

After Bud’s Air Force Retirement, Peggy and Bud moved back to Arlington, TX to raise their boys, Mike and Danny. Peggy was a wonderful mother who was completely engaged in her sons’ activities…PTA, den mother for Cub Scouts, team mother for numerous sports teams, etc. Her house was always the gathering place for her boys and all their friends. Once the boys got older, Peggy went back to her lifelong calling as an educator, teaching until retirement at Wood Elementary School in Arlington. She loved her students and teaching as a profession, continuing to support younger teachers after retirement as a mentor through the Professional Educators Organization.

Peggy and Bud moved to Boise, ID in 2006 to be closer to their granddaughters, Ashley and Brooke. Peggy loved baking, especially pies, and also enjoyed needlepointing and quilting. It gave Peggy great joy to give away the things that she made to the people that she loved. Peggy also enjoyed singing in the church choir and even when her voice got weaker, she said that “I’ll always have a song in my heart.”

Although Peggy was a Texan, she absolutely adored visiting Southwest Harbor, Maine in the summers to escape the Texas heat. Bud grew up there, and Peggy fell in love with Acadia National Park. She considered herself a true “Maine-iac” and always wanted to move there.

Peggy is survived by her son Michael Kenney and his wife Audrey, her granddaughter Ashley Kenney Gonzalez and her husband Wil and great-grandson Mateo, and her granddaughter Brooke Kenney Sandoz and her husband Tommy. She is also survived by her sisters-in-law Jane Kenney and Ruth Jellison in Southwest Harbor, Maine.

Peggy was predeceased by her husband Bud, her sons Scott and Danny, her parents Howard and Mary, her brothers Jimmy and Dean, and her sister-in-law Barbara.

Upon her son Danny’s death from a brain tumor in 1999, Bud and Peggy along with Danny’s friends established an endowed scholarship at Texas A&M University in Danny’s honor.
