Carol Boneita Crawford, age 78, of Portage passed away from a long battle with cancer on July 5, 2025. She was born on August 31, 1946, in Shelby, Michigan to the late Wilbur and Phyllis (Mitteer) Wygant.

Carol will be remembered for her unshakable strength and dedication to her work as a nurse and the matriarch of her family.

Born and raised in Shelby, Michigan, Carol graduated from Shelby High School before pursuing nursing at Muskegon Community College. She became a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) and went on to serve her community providing excellent care. Most of her career was spent at Shelby Hospital and Friendship Village of Kalamazoo, where she dedicated around 30 years of her life. Carol also served as a travel nurse volunteer with the American Red Cross.

She and her husband, Chuck Cummings, spent many joyful years together in Surprise, Arizona. After retirement, Carol helped her family open and operate The Crew Family Restaurant and Bakery in Portage. She also proudly served as the Exalted Ruler of the Elks Lodge in Paw Paw, Michigan.

Carol was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Charles “Chuck” Cummings; son-in-law, Richard Taylor; brothers, Raymond (Barb) Wygant, Milo Wygant, and Stanley Wygant; and sister, Marion Wygant.

She is survived by her children, Debra (Tony) McCallum and Robert Hren; grandchildren, Tony McCallum, Brian McCallum, Christopher (Samantha) McCallum, Timothy McCallum, Zachary (Chelsea) Hren, and Tiffany Hren; great-grandchildren, David, Anthony, Aiden, Caleb, Cameron, Eli, Elaina, Arianna, Josh, and Hunter; siblings, Jean (Ted) Franklin, Judy (Gene) Franklin, Mary (Joe) Dodge, Roger Wygant, and Sheryl (Chuck) Dodge; special nieces, Paula (Tim) Randolph and Betty Jo (Stacy) Wygant; as well as numerous other nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Carol’s life will be held on Sunday, August 31, from 11:00am until 2:00pm at the family restaurant: The Crew Family Restaurant and Bakery, located at 5200 Portage Road, Portage, Michigan 49002.

Carol will be laid to rest at a later to be determined time with her late husband, Chuck, at Ft. Custer National Cemetery.
