Joan F. Sweeney Obituary

Joan F. Sweeney, 85, formerly of Cortland, passed away on July 5, 2025.

Joan was born July 22, 1939 in Lowville, a daughter of the late George and Emma Largett Farr.

She had been a resident of Groton for the past several years and had enjoyed several years living in South Carolina with her late husband, Donel Sweeney.

Joan had most recently been employed at George Jr. Republic Union Free School and Cornell University, and had worked several years at Cortland Savings Bank and owned Jo-Marie’s Clothing Store in Dryden for many years.

Don and Joan enjoyed traveling, especially with their longtime friends, Jim and Pat Olley and Bob and Shirley Randolph.

Surviving are her four children, Daniel (Margaret) Sweeney; Darol (Brenda) Sweeney; Dennis (Pamela) Sweeney and Deborah Sweeney (Bobby Taylor); eleven grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren; her sister, Betty Ann (Ed) Braun; two sisters-in-law, Jeannette Farr and Marge Belmont; two brothers-in-law, Terry Collins and Richard Sweeney; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to her husband, Don in 2023, Joan was predeceased by a sister, Mary Louise Collins and two brothers, Thomas and Vincent Farr.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, July 18, 2025 in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Cortland.

A Celebration of Life will be held from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. on Friday, July 18, 2025 at Grace Christian Fellowship, 1250 Fisher Ave., Cortland.

Memorial contributions in Mrs. Sweeney’s name may be directed to the Brockway Truck Preservation Association, 4386 U.S. Route 11, Cortland, NY 13045 or to the charity of one’s choice.
