Kendall Reed Charles, age 27, of Hurley, Virginia, passed away on July 5, 2025, at the Johnson City Medical Center in Johnson City, Tennessee.
Kendall was born on May 11, 1998, in Tazewell County, Richlands, Virginia. He was the son of Kennith Ray Charles and Tracy Jo Charles of Hurley, Virginia.
Kendall was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County. He was an employee of the Keen Mountain Park at Oakwood, Virginia. Kendall was a loving son, brother, and uncle. He was a kindhearted person, a giver, and an organ donor. Kendall’s nicknames were Squirrel and uncle Nendal. Kendall enjoyed hunting, fishing, ginsenging, building stuff, and drawing. But most of all Kendall enjoyed playing with both of his nephews and the kids in general. The children always seem to cling to him. He graduated from Hurley High School, class of 2016. He could always brighten everyone’s day, even when he thought he wasn’t. No matter how bad of a day you were having, he could always make you laugh.
Kendall was preceded in death by his paternal great-grandma and great-grandpa, Mazie and Jim Charles, Ellis and Lula Justus; maternal great-grandma and great-grandpa, Agnes and Charles Phillips and Junior and Lassie Ratliff; paternal grandmother, Joann Charles; maternal grandfather, Joey Phillips; and uncle, DJ Phillips. He was also preceded in death by several great-uncles, great-aunts, and cousins.
Those left to cherish his loving memory include his parents, Tracy and Kenny Charles of Hurley, Virginia; brothers, Tanner Charles and wife Brianna of Clintwood, Virginia, and Kolton Charles and girlfriend Karissa Hurley of Hurley, Virginia; paternal grandfather, Jack Charles and step-grandmother Linda Gail Charles of Hurley, Virginia; maternal grandmother, Kathy Phillips and step-grandpa, Eric Ford of Princeton, West Virginia; step-grandma, Linda Phillips; host of aunts and uncles, Roger and Kathy Hurley, Stuart and Lisa Charles, Clarissa and Jacc Jackson; brother at heart, Ralph Jones of Richmond, Virginia; nephews, Christian Charles and Cayson Charles of Clintwood, Virginia; Godson, Zavior Cole Boothe (Bug) of Abingdon, Virginia; a father figure to Waylon Quinley and Declan Keene; special friends, Brittany Keene, Seth Vandyke, Keith Payne, Dazie Vanover, and Justin Justus; grandmother at heart, Ida Smith, and his loving dog, Roxie, who was also his comfort. He is also survived by several cousins, great-aunts, great-uncles, and a host of friends.
There will be a service for Kendall Reed Charles on Friday, July 11, 2025, 7:00 P.M. at the Virginia Funeral Home Chapel, Grundy, Virginia, with Dale Blankenship and Michael Stiltner officiating. The family will receive friends at 6:00 P.M.
A funeral service will be conducted on Saturday, July 12, 2025, 12:00 Noon at the Virginia Funeral Home Chapel, Grundy, Virginia, with Danny Robinson officiating.
In honor of Kendall’s wishes his body will be cremated.
