Joan Doris MacAskill

Baddeck, NS | 1937–2025

It is with deep love that we announce the peaceful passing of Joan Doris MacAskill on July 5, 2025, in the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, at the age of 87.

She was predeceased by her husband, Everett; her parents, Fraser and Nora Kerr; and a sister in infancy.

She is survived by her children, Joanne Dunlop of Baddeck and Duncan MacAskill (Helen) of Richmond Hill, Ontario; her grandchildren, Christie Neate (Chris), Jerrianne Dunlop MacKinnon (Carl), Liam Dunlop (their father, Shawn), Connor and Leanne MacAskill; and her great-grandchildren, Ava Neate, Abel and Wynn MacKinnon.

Mom was a loving mother and “Meemee” to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who were so fond of her — and of whom she was endlessly proud. Her travel buddies, Barb and Debbie, gave her many laughs and adventures, and we thank them so very much for their care. Also thank you to her Home Care workers, who brought care and comfort the past several months.

Mom worked for many years at the Gaelic College, known for her beautiful sewing, especially kilts and custom creations. Her strong faith and deep devotion to church and community never wavered. So too was her love for Celtic Colours — at which she volunteered for years and rarely missed a Festival Club! She brought care and grace to everything she did, from her warm home to her perfectly put-together self. Selfless, loving, and quietly strong, she gave endlessly without asking for anything in return. Her light and love will be deeply missed.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 12, 2025, at St. Ann’s Bay United Church, with Rev. Dale Crawford officiating. Reception to follow. Cremation has taken place under the kind direction of Sydney Memorial Chapel.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Teal to Heal – Unama’ki Cape Breton or the Hospice Society of Victoria County.
