Maria Luisa Madrigal Obituary

Maria Luisa Madrigal-Bonney, age 70, of Clovis, NM, passed away on Saturday, July 5, 2025, in San Antonio, TX.

This world lost a force of nature, but heaven gained a lion-hearted angel.

Maria Luisa, also known as Witcha to many, was born on October 5, 1954, to Leon Madrigal and Antonia Garcia.

In 1990, in Friona, Texas, she met the love of her life—Orlando Bonney Sr. From the moment they crossed paths, they were like Bonnie and Clyde. A ride-or-die love story full of laughter, adventure, and deep friendship. They shared a beautiful life and an everlasting love. Whether they were hosting family gatherings or heading to the casino for a night of fun, they did everything with heart—and they did it together. They always dressed to the nines, and you never saw them not matching. Their bond was unbreakable, and they were not just partners, but best friends to the very end.

Maria was what we Mexicans proudly call a chingona. A powerhouse of strength, grace, and grit, she came from a long line of fierce women and passed that fire down to every life she touched. Her legacy lives in every bold decision, every tender embrace, and every act of courage from the family she raised and fiercely protected.

She was a guerrera in every sense of the word—a true warrior. Her spirit was unshakable. She faced life’s battles with a head held high, a fire in her soul, and love overflowing from her heart. She was feisty, unfiltered, and always spoke the truth—even when it stung. But her words were never empty; they came from a place of wisdom, deep love, and fierce loyalty.

With the heart of a lion and the gentle touch of a butterfly, she knew when to fight and when to hold. She carried the stories of others like sacred treasures—joys, struggles, heartbreaks, and dreams. Her door was always open, her table always full, and no one left her home without a full belly and a full heart.

She was the best cook—la mera mera. You could try to copy her recipes, but good luck—there was something magical in her hands, a flavor only she could create. Just like her, her food had soul.

Her energy was boundless. When she danced, the room lit up. She moved through life with passion and purpose, never backing down from standing up for what she believed in. She made sure our traditions, our culture, our old-school ways of living—la raíz de nuestra gente—were not only remembered but also honored and carried forward.

For over 30 years, she worked hard at Excel—day in and day out—with the same strength and dedication she gave to her family. She never complained. She showed up. She gave her all.

Maria was more than a wife, mother, and grandmother—she was a healer, a protector, a storyteller, and a soul that left an imprint on every heart she encountered. Conversations with her were never small talk—they were deep, real, and unforgettable. She made people feel seen, heard, and loved without condition.

To know her was to know a rare kind of love. Unstoppable. Loyal. Eternal.

We will carry her legacy with pride, her traditions in our bones, and her voice in our hearts. Thank you, Maria, for teaching us what it means to be strong, to be soft, to be fearless, and to be chingona.
