Robert Bates Chace, Jr., 81, of Wallingford, passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 5, 2025, at MidState Medical Center. He was the beloved husband of 54 years to Corinne (Marino) Chace, his partner in life, laughter, and love.
Born in New Haven, CT, on July 22, 1943, Bob was the son of the late Robert B. Chace, Sr. and Dorothy (Dibble) Chace. A 1961 graduate of Hamden Hall Country Day School, Bob began his career at United Nuclear, eventually becoming the proprietor of Warner Miller in New Haven. He later owned and operated Thimble Island Wine & Liquor in Branford, where he became a familiar face and a steady presence in the local community.
Even in later years, Bob was never one to slow down. He found joy and purpose working as a school bus driver with Durham School Services, earning the affectionate title of “Bus Driver Bob” from countless students. It was a role he cherished.
Bob was known for his quick wit and unmistakable sense of humor. Whether he was telling a well-timed joke, delivering a dry one-liner, or playfully exaggerating a story just enough to make you laugh, Bob had a way of reminding others not to take life too seriously.
He also had a deep love for animals, a passion for cooking, and a flair for transforming birthdays into over-the-top, unforgettable celebrations. In all things, Bob led with warmth, generosity, and a twinkle in his eye.
He leaves behind a legacy of love and laughter in his wife Corinne and in his children: Robert B. Chace, III, Erica Hartline and her partner Jeff Quinn, Cynthia Case and her partner John Cook, and Alison Baxter. He was a proud grandfather to Mark Baxter, III, Jillian Case, Elena Baxter, Chad Hartline, Jr., Devyn Baxter, Mya Case, Grace Hartline, and Chace Hartline. He is also survived by his sister, Suzanne Stericker, and by many loving nieces and nephews.
Bob was predeceased by his brother, Bradley J. Chace, his son-in-law, Chad Hartline, Sr., and nephews Jeffrey Langbehn and Jonathan Langbehn.
Family and friends are invited to gather in remembrance on Saturday, July 12, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at The Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 N. Main St. Ext., Wallingford. Interment will be private.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that you plant a tree in Bob’s memory—a fitting tribute to a man who gave shade, laughter, and lasting joy to so many.
