James Cameron, son of the late Norman Cameron Sr. and Fannie Mae Underwood, was born on December 13, 1938, in Eutaw, Greene County, Alabama. He was raised by his grandparents, Lovell and Evie Cameron. At the age of 18 James left Alabama and enlisted into the U. S. Army and served in the United States and Ulm, Germany as a diesel mechanic. James was always the type of person that worked extra hard to be the boss. He was a devoted father and raised three children. His career consisted of many experiences including being employed by the Dayton Public School System and worked at Dunbar High School as a custodian. James was a member of Mt. Tabor Missionary Baptist Church in Dayton, Ohio.
James along with Joe Underwood, Willie (Pete) Maxwell, Clay Freeman, Fred Cooper and many more laborers formed a construction company and built homes in the Dunbar area in 1973. Soon after this he began working at K & T construction with Frank Thurmond doing construction work. Then, James joined his wife Joyce and together they built a great trucking company, Green Star Trucking, Inc. It was here that he developed relationships with SRI – Steve Rauch, Inc., K. P. Martin Trucking, Complete General Construction, Tall view Palladium Inc., Art Partin Trucking, Ewol Trucking, DJB Trucking, Middleton Trucking, Bob Butler, and many more.
James established a racing team and built 3 race cars and enjoyed this hobby to its fullest. He would also visit his home in Alabama every chance he could until his health began to fail. James’ final request was for his wife to tell everyone “Good-bye”.
James was preceded in death by his grandparents, Lovell and Evie Cameron; father, Norman Cameron Sr.; mother, Fannie Mae Underwood; great aunts, Catherine Strait and Bessie Bizzell; uncle and aunt, Reverend Ivory Cameron and Marie Cameron; uncle Jack Bizzell; aunts, Reola Bizzell, Bessie Bizzell; brothers, William Underwood, Norman Cameron Jr. and Randy Cameron; sister, Savilla Cameron; other aunts and uncles.
James leaves to cherish his memory, his soul mate, Joyce Sutton Cameron; 2 sons, Darnell J. Cameron, Sr., (Ann), Dumont L. Cameron; 1 daughter, Cynthia Cameron; 13 grandchildren, Denisha, Sh’ron, Sharnell, Shanique, Darnell Jr., Ariannah, Bakwan, James, Jaleesa, Jaliyah, De’Anthony, Dumont Jr., Jermaine; 16 great grandchildren; 4 brothers, Lee Arthur Cameron, Curtis Cameron (Marilyn), Billy R. Cameron, and Johnny R. Cameron; 4 sisters, Lucinda Mosely, Brenda Cameron, Norma Cameron- McCollough and Debra C. McGhee; 1 aunt, Bernice Carey; 2 uncles, Earnest Bizzell and James Bizzell; 1 great-aunt, Georgia Burton; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Funeral service 11:00 am Monday, July 21, 2025 at House of Wheat Funeral Home, 2107 N. Gettysburg Ave., Dayton OH. Visitation 9 am- 11 am. Family will receive friends 10 am- 11 am. Interment Dayton National Cemetery.
