Donald James “Huck” Smith, 89, of Farmersville, passed away at 11:45 p.m. Saturday, July 5, 2025, at Sunrise Skilled Nursing and Rehab in Virden. Mr. Smith was born in Virden, Illinois on July 16, 1935, the son of James and Mary Margaret (Scott) Smith. He graduated from Virden High School with the class of 1953. He proudly served in the United States Army during peacetime. Mr. Smith and the former Jane Warner were married October 20, 1990, at their home in rural Farmersville. They enjoyed nearly 35 years of marriage. She survives. He was employed for many years as a coal miner and surface superintendent at Crown I, Monterey, and Crown II mines. Mr. Smith was a man who had many interests, including fishing, photography, bowling, woodworking and carpentry. He was an avid Chicago Cubs fan. He enjoyed wintering in Port Charlotte, FL. Mr. Smith was an antique dealer. He stayed in touch with his Army buddies and delighted in traveling to visit them. Anyone who knew him was familiar with hearing him say “Are you with me?”

Sons, Ronald W. (Annie) Smith of Thayer, IL; Donald L. (Diane) Smith of Marana, AZ; and Derek S. (Jamie) Smith of Bradenton, FL

Daughter, Lillie (Brad) Klaus of Girard, IL

Grandchildren, Jeremy Coleman, Justin Klaus, Robynn Smith, Brandon Smith, and Broderek Smith

Great-grandchildren, Rileigh Geitl, Mox Coleman, Mariah Salas, Isaiah Salas, Elsie Klaus, Adelyn Klaus, and Ruby Klaus.

Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his parents, James and Mary Margaret Smith, and a sister, Linda Jean Campbell.
