David I. String Obituary

David Irvin String passed away peacefully in Paoli, Pennsylvania, at the age of 84. Born in Philadelphia, Dave spent his life devoted to service—whether through his work, his family, or his community—and he did so with a quiet strength and a dry sense of humor that could always bring a smile, even in the toughest moments.

Dave proudly served in the United States Navy before embarking on a long and distinguished career at Boeing’s Helicopter Division in Ridley Park. Over the course of more than four decades, he played a pivotal role in managing Boeing’s training department, leaving a lasting legacy of excellence and mentorship. Even in retirement, he continued to give his time and talents, taking on a second career at Kvaerner Philadelphia Shipyard, where he once again led training efforts.

Service, however, wasn’t limited to his profession. Dave gave generously of his time as a firefighter and EMT with the Norwood Fire Company for many years. He became an EMT instructor and state evaluator, teaching students at the Delaware County Emergency Services Training Center, JeffSTAT, and beyond. His commitment to saving lives and empowering others through first aid and CPR training touched countless individuals and organizations.

Outside of work and service, Dave found joy in the outdoors. He was an avid hunter and fisherman who loved being in nature, and he took pride in building things. He was always ready to lend a hand to a friend or neighbor in need. He also coached football for the Norwood Athletic League, delighting in watching young athletes grow.

Dave was a proud member of the Masonic Lodge in Pennsylvania. Above all else, he was a devoted family man.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Sandra String; his children, David F. String and his wife Tina, Joy Cropper and her husband Bryan, and John D. String and his fiancée Madeline; and his grandchildren, Carly Ann. David, William, Emery, and Cole, his brother Kenneth String, and his wife Kathleen. He was preceded in death by his brother Daniel String and his sister Charlotte “Sissy” Mummert (née String).

His steady presence, generosity, and signature wit will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend his Funeral on Tuesday from 9:30 AM until 10:45 AM at the Cavanagh Family Funeral Home 301 Chester Pike, Norwood. Followed by his Funeral Service at 11:00 AM. Interment Glenwood Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Dave’s memory to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, an organization he deeply admired. Contributions can be made online at www.stjude.org or by mail to:
