Judith A. Genandt Obituary

Judith “Judy” Genandt of East Dundee, IL, beloved mother, grandmother, friend, and storyteller, passed away peacefully at Sherman Hospital at the age of 79 after a private year-long battle with cancer.

Born in Lanark, Illinois, on November 19, 1945, Judy was the daughter of Harold and Harriet Genandt (née Sweitzer). A proud graduate of Lanark High School in 1963, she soon set out for Elgin, Illinois, where she would build a life centered around family and later, her passion for writing.

Judy raised two children, Michael (Janice) Flaningam and Melinda (Chris) Pate, who were the lights of her life. After they had grown, she worked in an administrative role at Paccar Financial before working as the office manager at Messiah Lutheran Church. When the church closed in 2016, Judy embraced her lifelong love of writing and flourished, becoming a published author of four books, several mini-stories, and a sought-after ghostwriter. True to form, she was working on a story even in her final days, driven by the joy of storytelling and the beauty of words.

To those who knew and loved her, she was “Nana”—a role she cherished above all others. Her two grandchildren, Hunter and Maddie Pate, were the heart of her world, and she poured her love into every moment with them. From trips to Great Wolf Lodge to Lake Geneva, sunflower and tulip fields, Memorial Day adventures, and countless other excursions, Judy created lasting memories and a legacy of love that will live on through them.

Judy had a gift for nurturing plants, gardens, animals (except spiders), stories, creativity, and people. Her green thumb was legendary, and her cooking even more so. Her beer bread, stewed tomatoes, mashed potatoes, molasses cookies, cherry cake, and chocolate éclair cake were cherished by all who were lucky enough to share a meal at her table. She would always make enough for you to take home the leftovers!

She also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, cousins, and countless friends, as well as her dear friend Carol Morro, who remained a steadfast companion for the last 30 years. She is preceded in death by her parents, her brother Dennis “Denny” Genandt, close cousins Ventia Richtsmeier and Faye Shellhause, and her beloved granddog Dakota.

Judy’s independent spirit, wit, artistry, and love for books and animals will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered. At Judy’s request, she will be cremated and her inurnment will be private. Family and friends will join together to celebrate her life on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, from 5:00 P.M. until the time of her Memorial Service at 6:00 P.M. at the Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church, 310 E. Main Street in East Dundee, with Rev. William P. Yonker, Senior Pastor, officiating.
