Stanley Bates Obituary
Stanley Bates 77, of DeWitt, Iowa, passed away peacefully on July 5, 2025, surrounded by family at home.
Stanley Warren Bates was born August 24, 1947, in Savanna, Illinois, to Alta and Martha (Petersen) Bates. After graduating from Miles High School in 1965, he joined the US Navy. Stanley married RosaAnn Seamster in 1969, together they had Elisa and Robin. They later divorced. After the Navy, he returned to telecommunications work, retiring after over forty years. Stanley also was a business owner for many years.
Stanley and Kay Blackburn were married in 2007, he was blessed with the addition of two bonus daughters, Jenny and La Von.
Throughout his life he was known for his western hat, western boots, and his community service. He volunteered with Boy Scouts, Masonic Lodge, therapy dogs, rescue scuba diver, Hunter Education Instructor for forty years and other volunteer opportunities.
He is survived by his wife, Kay, son Robin (Angie) Bates, daughters, Elisa (Mike) Overstake, Jenny Blackburn, and La Von (Greg) Cooper; grandchildren, Taylor and Reaghan Bates, Brianna (Andrew Accola), Remington, and Hunter Overstake, Katie, Anthony, and Dawson Mussmann, "Favorites" Jed, Amber, Lili, and Madi Cheramy; brother, Kevin Bates and sister Marie Smith; his therapy dogs, Sadie and Preston, and several nieces and nephews.
He was known for taking the road less traveled, enjoying the outdoors, and never meeting a stranger. Some of his hobbies included hunting, square dancing, woodworking, beekeeping, rendezvousing, and therapy dogs.
Visitation will be Thursday July 10, 2025, from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt, with Scottish Rite Rose Croix Service following. A Funeral Service will be held at 12:00 p.m. Friday July 11, 2025, in the funeral home, with military honors following. Interment will be at Sterling Cemetery with private family service, at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Clinton County Youth Hunter Education Challenge (YHEC) or St Jude's Hospital for children.
