MIDDLETON - With deep love and profound sadness, we announce the passing of Earl Herbert Lochner, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, teacher, coach and friend. Earl passed away surrounded by his loved ones at the age of 83, from Lewy Body Dementia.
Born on November 17, 1941, in Roxbury, Wis., Earl was the youngest of seven children born to August and Aurelia (Breunig) Lochner. He graduated from Sauk City High School and earned his degree from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater in 1964.
Earl married Chris (Endres) on June 11, 1966. Together they raised three children - Nick, Renee and Tony - and were later blessed with eight grandchildren. Earl was a constant presence at his children’s and grandchildren’s sporting events and activities, showing up without fanfare but always with steady support.
He taught high school math for 35 years, including 31 years at Middleton High School, where he also coached football and baseball. His contributions to high school athletics were honored in 1997 when he was inducted into the Wisconsin High School Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame.
Before retiring from teaching, Earl began escorting trips for Burkhalter Travel - a role he continued for 18 years. After retiring, he also worked as a rough lumber estimator with UBC for 10 years.
Earl is survived by his wife of 59 years, Chris; his children, Nick (Laurie) Lochner, Renee (Wade Krogwold) and Tony (Katie) Lochner; and his grandchildren, Eden (Redmond Wallace), Luke and Grace Lochner; Madeline and Ben Krogwold; and Bennett, Brighton and Cooper Lochner.
He is also survived by many brothers- and sisters-in-law, including Ron (Darlene) Endres, Liz Swiggum, Greg (Kathy) Endres, Chuck (Diane) Endres, Luvonn Tate, Luann (Bob Koehl), Randy (Theresa) Endres, Tom (Julie) Endres, Bob (Lisa) Endres, Bonnie (Terry Lovell) and Sherri (Dean Lovell); along with many nieces, nephews, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, August and Aurelia; his in-laws, Greg and Rose (Maier) Endres; siblings and their spouses, Victor (Betty), Alex (Amelda), Jerry (Elaine), Kenny (Mary Jane), Margie (Bob) Nachreiner and Anne (Tom) Gaukel; brother-in-law, Jack Tate; and nephew, Mark Lochner.
Earl was known for his calm presence, sharp mind and dry wit. He lived simply, worked hard, and showed up for the people who mattered to him. He will be deeply missed.
A visitation will be held at GUNDERSON WEST FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 7435 University Ave., Middleton, from 3 p.m. until 6 p.m. on Thursday, July 17, 2025.
