Johnnie Mae Stewart Obituary

The journey down life’s path is filled with love, generosity and compassion from family and friends, in the word of God. We have lost one of the strongest lights of our lives but believe that she will continue to shine in our hearts.

Johnnie Mae Stewart was the sixth child of Cleveland and Willie Ethel Lewis. She spent her childhood in Greenville, MS until moving to Chicago to attend Theodore Herzl Junior College. Her career began as a Lab Technician at Mount Sinai Hospital in Chicago. Johnnie Mae was a lifelong learner and received many awards and accolades, including recognition from Malcolm X College of Child Development, Southern Illinois University Carbondale Division of Continuing Education and Workshops for Head Start Teachers from Roosevelt University College of Education.

After earning a bachelor’s degree from Northeastern Illinois University, she worked twenty years as a Placement Specialist at Harold Washington College, City College of Chicago. Johnnie Mae was very passionate about her profession and was committed to ensuring her students succeed. She helped many of them secure career opportunities in various fields such as transportation, health care, the U.S. Postal Service and college administration.

In 1962, Johnnie Mae married Louis Selborne Stewart and together they welcomed their beloved son, Byron Selborne Stewart, who became the center of their lives. She maintained a deep faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and was a long-time member of Ebenezer AME Church, in Evanston, IL.

The family would like to give a heartfelt thank you to the Dobson Plaza staff.

Johnnie Mae passed away peacefully on July 5, 2025. Left to cherish her memory, in addition to her son Byron (David), is her sister, Dr. Mabel L. Williams (Melvin), predeceased by Mary Lee Lacy (James), Cleveland Lewis Jr. (Gary), Grover Lewis (Edna), Hazel L. Fletcher (Elroy), Willie Lewis (Alice) and Annie Greer (D.S.).
