Rochester, NY – July 5, 2025
With immense sadness and deep gratitude for the precious moments shared, we announce the peaceful passing of Harry “Jerry” Gitsis on July 5th, 2025, in Rochester, NY, at the age of 91. He now joins his cherished wife of 61 years, Chrisanthi. Affectionately known as Jerry, he was a devoted husband, father, grandfather (“Pops/Papou”), brother, cousin, friend, proud Greek-American and beloved restaurateur.
Jerry was predeceased by his wife, Chrisanthi Gitsis; his parents, Ilias and Victoria; and siblings Dionysus, Sotirios, Stergios and Florika.
He is survived by his loving brother, Christos Gitsis; son, Ilias (Patricia) Gitsis; daughter, Vaciliki (Stephanos) Papademetriou; grandchildren, Eleni Gitsis Papademetriou, Jerry Gitsis, and Chrysan Gitsis; as well as many dear cousins, nieces, nephews, friends, and “furry grandchildren.”
Born in 1934 in the mountain village of Drosopigi, Greece during the Great Depression, Jerry embodied the spirit of perseverance and opportunity that defines the immigrant journey. At just 17, he and his older brother Stergios left behind post-war Greece for a new life in America. They arrived through Ellis Island and first settled in Rockville, Indiana, before moving to Gary, where Jerry briefly worked in the steel mills. The grit of that job only fueled his ambition to forge his own path, which led him to Rochester, NY, where he would build a successful life and lasting legacy.
Jerry founded and operated several restaurants, including Jerry’s Family Restaurant (Spencerport), Town & Country Family Restaurant (Chili) and Gitsis Party House (Ogden). One of his first and perhaps most iconic ventures, was Gitsis Texas Hots on Monroe Avenue, which he opened alongside his brothers Stergios and Sotirios, and cousin Dimitri, just 10 years after arriving in the U.S. These establishments weren’t just places to eat, they were warm, welcoming gathering spots where food and friendship were served in equal measure.
Most recently, Jerry was the familiar and beloved face of the Coal Tower Restaurant in Pittsford, where he welcomed guests for over 20 years. His tireless work ethic, kind spirit, and unforgettable smile made him a local institution.
Jerry cherished simple pleasures: a cheeseburger (or two), spending time with family, especially his grandchildren, Chrisanthi’s legendary homemade pita and travels with her, particularly their Alaskan adventure and winters in Port Charlotte, Florida. He loved card games with his cousin, Danny Gitsis, and dear friend, Jerry Pappas, where laughter and lighthearted competition were always on the menu.
Jerry was a longtime member of the YMCA, an avid Gunsmoke viewer and a WWF wrestling superfan. Jerry remained deeply proud of his Greek roots and was an active member of the Drosopigi Society.
Jerry will be remembered for his warmth, humor and gift for storytelling. He could light up a room with his laughter, welcome strangers like old friends and always found joy in the everyday. His charm, wisdom and signature sayings will live on in all who knew and loved him.
We will miss him immensely and are forever grateful for the lessons and memories he leaves behind.
Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, July 9th from 9:00–11:00 AM at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church (962 East Ave, Rochester, NY 14607), followed by the funeral service at 11:00 AM.
Private interment to follow.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jerry’s memory to the American Heart Association, National Kidney Foundation, or Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church.
