Josie Wilma Sellers Abernathy, 89, of Belmont passed away July 5, 2025. She was born January 27, 1936 in Brunswick County, North Carolina, a daughter of the late Wilbur and Evelyn Wescott Sellers.


Wilma retired from the Belmont Chamber of Commerce and continued working as a secretary at Cramerton First Baptist. She was a member of South Point Baptist Church and served as a choir member, WMU Director, and Sunday School Teacher. Wilma was active with Meels on Wheels and volunteered with hospice. She was an avid reader and enjoyed word searches. Wilma was a loving mother and grandmother.


Wilma is survived by her children, Tim Abernathy and wife, Teresa of Belmont, Tilda Abernathy Jones of Cramerton and Johnny Jones of Belmont; granddaughter, Kayla Abernathy; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Billy Hugh Abernathy; and sister, Faye Sellers Cobb.           


The family will receive friends from 1:00pm until 1:45pm at South Point Baptist Church on Thursday, July 10, 2025.  


A memorial service will follow at 2:00pm at the church with Rev. Mike Phillips officiating.  Interment will be private in Evergreen - "A Quiet Place".


In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to South Point Baptist Church, 124 Horsley Ave, Belmont, NC 28012.
