It is with deep sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved father, Michael Lloyd Hawryluk surrounded by his loving wife of 62 years Alice and his family on Saturday, July 5, 2025, at 90 years of age.
Michael was born on November 17, 1934, in Meacham, SK, to Sam and Sophie Hawryluk. He grew up in Alvena, where he helped with the family lumber yard. A bright and curious child, Michael’s thirst for knowledge was nurtured by his parents, and he became the first in his family to attend university. In 1958, he graduated with a Bachelor of Science from the U of S. His honours thesis, conducted under Dr. Spinks, focused on Ion Exchange Auto- Chromatography—the ability to separate two isotopes of an element. It was later presented at the University of Southern California, earning a tie for second place recognition.
During his time in Saskatoon, Michael met the love of his life, Alice, and the two were married on July 6, 1963. They soon began their greatest adventure—building a life and family together. His career took them abroad when he accepted a position with Robin Hood Flour Mills, relocating the young couple to Venezuela. That experience sparked a lifelong passion for travel, culture, and collecting art from around the world.
Wishing to return home to raise their family, Michael and Alice settled back in Saskatoon, where he began a new chapter of his professional life. In 1968, he joined Allan Potash Mine, to establish the quality control lab and later was promoted to Chief Metallurgist responsible for quality control and metallurgy. He remained there until his retirement in 1997, marking nearly 30 years of dedicated service.
Michael was a man of many interests and talents. He was an avid golfer, an enthusiastic learner, and a skilled designer and carpenter. He was always ready to offer a helping hand, particularly to his children and their young families. His curiosity, warmth, and generosity left a lasting impression on all who knew him.
Michael will be lovingly remembered by his daughters: Donna McInnis (Lonnie), Debbie Bennett (Paul), Darlene Bell (Craig), and Diana Hawryluk; treasured grandchildren: Logan, Harper (Heath), Ethan, Alissa, Liam, Sophia, and Madeline; and great-granddaughter Kinsley. He is also survived by his brothers and sister in-law: Lois McIntyre, Bernie Larose, John Samborski, and Arnold Goodwin; along with many nieces, nephews, extended family, and lifelong friends.
He was predeceased by his cherished wife of 62 years, Alice; granddaughter Vivian (Diana); parents Sam and Sophie Hawryluk; siblings Edward Hawryluk and Vera Oranga; parents in-law Pierre and Anney Larose; and numerous brothers- and sisters-in-law.
Michael’s legacy of kindness, wisdom, and quiet strength will continue to inspire all who knew and loved him.
