Gussie J. VanLaningham Obituary

Gussie Joan (Shalla) VanLaningham, 92, of Beatrice, died Saturday morning, July 5, 2025 at the Beatrice Community Hospital.  She was born on January 3, 1933 in Odell to Joseph and Jennie (Pribyl) Shalla, baptized at the Odell Methodist Church, and graduated from Barneston High School in 1951.  She married Melvin L. VanLaningham on June 20, 1954, at St. John Lutheran Church of Beatrice and they were blessed with three children, Michael, Kathy, and Beth.  Gussie worked for many years as a bookkeeper and secretary for the local gas company, Fidelity Finance, and Bob O’Neill Insurance.  She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church of Beatrice.  Gussie enjoyed traveling, watching sports, going to the casino, and spending time with her family.

 

Survivors include her son, Michael (Jean) VanLaningham of Beatrice; daughter, Beth (Brian) Busboom of Adams; nine grandchildren, Matt (Abby) VanLaningham, Jesse (Gina) VanLaningham, Erin (Bruce) Baete, Jenni Bernhardt, Tara (Frank) Hanshaw, Whitney Lopez, Jeff (Bambi) Timmermans, Jerod (Clancy) Timmermans, and Jim (Jessica) Dugan; 21 great-grandchildren; soon-to-be five great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Becky (Randy) Heizman and Theresa Havoraka; sisters-in law, Barbara VanLaningham and Susan (Ray) Parde; nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin, who died on June 19, 1994; her daughter, Kathy Timmermans (2004); parents, Joseph and Jennie Shalla; step-mother, Verna Shalla; sister, Donna Shalla; grandsons-in-law, Matthew Bernhardt and Leroy Lopez; brothers-in-law, Kenneth “Tobe” VanLaningham and Gale VanLaningham and his wife, Virleen; sisters-in-law, Pat (George) Alpaugh, Shirley (Vern) Worm, and Beverly (Earl) Witzki.

 

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Tuesday, July 8, 2025, at St. John Lutheran Church of Beatrice with Pastor Travis Panning officiating. Burial will be at the Evergreen Home Cemetery of Beatrice.  A family prayer service will be held at 10:15 A.M. on Tuesday in the church chapel.  In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to St. John Lutheran Church of Beatrice.
