Ruth Olsen, age 96 of Hastings and formerly Chicago, Illinois, died peacefully on Monday evening, May 22, 2017, at Regina Senior Living in Hastings, following a brief illness. Ruth Hansen, the daughter of Thorwald and Esther (Thygesen) Hansen, was born on December 31, 1920, in Brevik, Norway. When she was only six years old, Ruth immigrated to the United States with her parents and settled in Chicago, where she continued to live for 85 years of her life. As a young woman, Ruth enjoyed staying connected with her many childhood friends and continued with those connections throughout her life. She later graduated from beauty school and was a longtime beautician in Chicago. Ruth was confirmed into her faith as well as united in marriage to Sigurd Olsen at the St. Timothy Lutheran Church in Chicago. Ruth was very proud of her grandsons and their families, and enjoyed the opportunity of living close to them both in Chicago as well as in Hastings since 2012. While they were young, she enjoyed taking them on many short trips in the Chicago area, and more recently enjoyed being Oldemor (great grandma) to her grandsons children. Ruth was also known for her Norwegian dancing, and was her daughter Eileens favorite dancing partner. She was preceded in death by her parents, and by her husband, Sigurd. Ruth is survived by her only child, Eileen (Julian) Ronning of Hastings; her two grandsons and their families, Kristian (Dr. Lizbet Langseth) Ronning and their children, Julia, Linnea, Tor, and Espen, of Hastings, and Erik (Cheri Kemp) Ronning and their children and step-children, Viktoria, Emily, Mason, and Ella Ronning and Brianna, Taylor, and Rachel, of River Falls, Wisconsin; her many cousins in Telemark, Norway, and Florida; and by many other relatives and friends. Private family services, with interment next to her husband at Mt. Olive Cemetery, will take place in Chicago at a later date. Arrangements are being completed by Caturia-Smidt Funeral Home Cremation Services of Hastings.
