Marie Elizabeth Cregar (Hartvigsen) Obituary
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Marie Elizabeth Cregar, who left this world peacefully on June 22, 2025, at the age of 58, after a brief, yet courageous battle with pancreatic cancer, surrounded by her loving family at her home in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
Marie was born on September 30,1966 in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Dale Hartvigsen and Julie Iverson. She was a 1984 graduate of Viewmont High School in Bountiful, Utah. Marie went on to study at Westminster College in Salt Lake City while holding a full-time job in the energy industry with The Williams Companies in the Field Services and Kern River Pipeline divisions. The highlight of her collegiate years was a life-altering study abroad semester at Cambridge University in Cambridge, England. Marie graduated Summa Cum Laude with a bachelor’s degree in English in 1994.
After graduation, Marie continued her successful career with Williams and eventually took a position with the Marketing and Trading division in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Within weeks of her move, Marie met the love of her life, Christopher Cregar, a fellow Williams employee. As a couple, Marie and Chris lived and worked together in Tulsa until 2000, when they relocated to Stamford, Connecticut, to work in energy trading jobs in New York City. They were married on December 9, 2000, in a fabulous, yet slightly rainy, waterfront ceremony in Key West, Florida. In July 2002, the couple welcomed their first child, Grace Elizabeth, and it was then that Marie immediately realized that motherhood was her true calling in life. Marie never returned to work, as caring for Grace consumed every fiber of her being. In 2005, the young family relocated to Ann Arbor, Michigan, where in September 2006, they celebrated the birth of their son, Dylan James. With her family now complete, Marie would spend every waking hour the rest of her life showering her husband and children with love and devotion.
Marie lived her life with passion and purpose. She loved music, traveling, was an expert cook and a voracious reader and lover of the English language. Every day of Marie’s life was a devotion to her family, friends, and the many communities in which she served. She was an avid volunteer, a self-less caregiver, and a passionate advocate for those with special needs. Marie had a kind and gentle heart, a quick wit, and showed immeasurable strength in the face of adversity. She touched the souls of everyone she encountered with kindness, joy, and love. Her passing leaves a gaping wound in all our hearts that will never heal.
Marie was preceded in death by her father, Dale Hartvigsen, and father-in-law, James Cregar.
Marie is survived by her loving husband, Christopher; her children, Grace and Dylan; her mother Julie Iverson (Grant); stepmother Jill Hartvigsen; brothers Nathan Iverson (Macy Monson), Harris Hartvigsen, Travis Hartvigsen (Tami), and Eric Hartvigsen (Amanda); and many beloved nieces, nephews, in-laws, cousins and dear friends.
Friends and family are invited to attend a visitation on Friday, June 27 from 6:00-8:00p.m. at Nie Funeral Home located at 3767 West Liberty Road, Ann Arbor.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, June 30 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church located at 2250 E. Stadium Boulevard, Ann Arbor.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions in Marie’s memory be made to: Ann Arbor Academy, Living and Learning Enrichment Center, or Camp Skywild.
