Anthony Lawrence ("Tony") Mercury, 95, of Hagerstown, MD, passed away on Monday, April 8, 2019 at Doeys House. Born, April 19, 1923 in Shamokin, PA, he was the son of Vincenzo and Giovannina (Santilli) Mercury. As a young man, Tony served with the Civilian Conservation Corps in New Mexico and then in the U.S. Army during World War II. In 1962, he moved with his wife and children to Hagerstown, went to work for Mack Truck, and joined St. Joseph Catholic Church, where he also volunteered. He retired from Mack in 1986. Tony belonged to the Golden Bulldogs, Knights of Columbus, and Sons of Italy. Among his greatest joys were being in the outdoors, fishing, and traveling, but he was also a people person, always ready to help out friends and family or entertain them with well-told tales. Tony is survived by his wife of 69 years, Florence Patricia Mercury; his son, James Mercury and daughter, Suzanne Mercury, both of Hagerstown; and brother, Joseph Mercury of Shamokin. In addition to his parents, Tony was preceded in death by his sister, Lena Korzenaskie. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 17630 Virginia Ave., Hagerstown, MD, at 11 am on Wednesday, April 17. The Rev. Christopher Moore will officiate.
