Wendel, Marie A. (nee Konicki)
Oct. 25, 1957 - Apr. 30, 2025
Age 67; beloved wife of 47 years to Ernest "Russ" Wendel; loving mother of Kristin (Shaun) Deutsch, Lisa (Matt) Baker and Sara (Joe) Augustus; cherished grandmother of Aden, Mason, Callie, Brue, and Prynn; dearest sister of Kathleen (Richard) Sabin and Susan (Gregory) Serwon; also survived by nieces and nephews.
A natural caretaker, Marie doted over her children and grandchildren. Her greatest joy was watching them grow and encouraging them to let their personalities shine. There was nothing she wouldn’t do for them, putting them above all else, including leaving the workforce to provide after school and summer care for her grandchildren. Marie also took great care in helping to provide support and comfort for her parents during their final years. Marie celebrated a half century love highlighted by a forty-seven-and-a-half-year marriage to a New Jersey Navy boy, Russ. Together they laid roots in Florida, New Jersey, and New York. Her laugh could be heard for miles as they built their life together. She loved to travel and enjoyed road trips with Russ to visit their daughters and their families along the East Coast as well as spending time at the Jersey Shore. Her many acts of compassion and community are highlighted in her work volunteering for fundraisers and organizing basket raffles for the Lancaster Regional Players. In crocheting blankets for the homeless and hats for the underprivileged. In her time volunteering as a Girl Scout leader and signing up for volunteer shifts with the Ten Lives Club. Marie took great pride in her gardens, which she spent several hours in and often displayed her green thumb online for people to enjoy. She was a small business owner, traveling to craft and artisan shows selling her many one of a kind creations. Her love of crocheting was life long and she found joy in her local Western New York Yarnies family and online square swaps, creating blankets across the world. As an avid photographer, Marie spent time capturing candid pictures of her family and unique perspective photos, which you would often find displayed at the Erie County Fair. Marie is remembered in the commitment to her family. In the strength of her conviction. In her love for the underdog. In her humanity towards nature’s creatures. In her whimsical attributes and her unapologetic sense of self. The family will be present Friday, June 6, 2025 from 5-8 PM at the (Cleveland Hill Chapel) AMIGONE FUNERAL HOME, INC., 569 Cleveland Dr. (near Harlem Rd.)
