Flynn Leo Meyer, 80, of Sumner, passed away Friday, March 29, 2019, at Linn Haven Rehab and Healthcare in New Hampton. Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 2, 2019, at St. John Lutheran Church-Spring Fountain of rural Sumner with Rev. George Volkert officiating. Interment will follow at Lutheran Cemetery of Sumner Township. Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday, April 1st at Becker-Milnes Funeral Home in Sumner and for one hour preceding services at the church on Tuesday. Memorials may be made in Flynn’s name to either St. John Lutheran Church-Spring Fountain or the Iowa Chapter of Alzheimer’s Association @ www.alz.org/iowa Flynn Leo Meyer was born on October 29, 1938, in Sumner, IA, to his parents Leo and Gail (Creager) Meyer. He was baptized December 11, 1938 by Rev. Runge and confirmed March 29, 1953, by Rev. Sonntag, both at St. John Lutheran Church-Spring Fountain, rural Sumner. He attended Sumner High School graduating with the class of 1957. Flynn worked at Zimmerman Motors following high school before a long career at John Deere in Waterloo. Flynn was united in marriage with Joyce Nauholz on January 26, 1958, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua with Rev. Utterbach officiating. Following Flynn’s retirement of thirty years at John Deere in 1994, he and Joyce enjoyed seeing the country during seven years of part time employment with Sportsman Quest. Flynn loved his sports which began with his recognized high school career, continued with his regular attendance at frequent grandchildren activities, in addition to constant critique of his favorite sports teams for underperforming. Flynn also enjoyed anything and everything outdoors, to include yard work, gardening, fishing, hunting, golfing, and creating memories with friends. Flynn took pride in passing along his love of the outdoors to his grandchildren during what became a traditional week at Eagle Lake Minnesota in June of every year. Flynn is survived by his wife, Joyce of Sumner; daughter, Lynn (Brad) Ohrt of Reinbeck; son, Dean (Beth) Meyer of Barrington, Illinois; four grandchildren, Jacob (Shanelle) Pedersen of West Union, Kyle (Danika) Meyer of Roanoke, Texas, Katelyn (Alex) Tungland of Cedar Falls, and Zach (Kerri) Meyer of Chicago, Illinois; four great-grandchildren, Roselyn and Maelyn Pedersen, Grant Meyer, and Joslynn Tungland; three sisters, Chrystal Meier of Longmont, Colorado, Karen Gaede of Denver, and Miriam Johnson of Sumner; brother, Wayne Meyer of Sumner; step-mother, Marlene Meyer of Sumner; half-brother, Barry (Jill) Meyer of Sumner; and half-sister, Sherry Johnson of Mason City. Flynn was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers-in-law, Warren Gaede, Jerry Johnson, and Everett Meier; and one sister-in-law, LuAnn Meyer.
