Christopher Scott Smith, known affectionately as Chris, embarked on his final journey on April 23, 2025, leaving a trail of laughter and wisdom in his wake. Born on December 14, 1960, in the bustling city of Birmingham, AL, Chris quickly became the embodiment of wit and charm. He passed away suddenly in Boston, MA.
Chris was the kind of guy who knew the streets of Boston like the back of his hand, whether he was behind the wheel of a taxi or navigating life's unpredictable roads. He started his illustrious driving career in 1978, and let's be honest, the GPS had nothing on Chris. His taxi was more than just a ride; it was a rolling historical tour of the neighborhoods, where he was both the driver and the teacher. In the 1990s, he took his show on the road to New York City, driving a limousine and surely doubling as an unofficial tour guide with his encyclopedic knowledge of the city's history.
After a stint of bright lights and honking horns, Chris returned to Boston in the early 2000s, where he continued to charm locals and tourists alike from his cab at Logan Airport. He didn't just drive a taxi; he Imparted his love for his favorite city, its many lesser-known museums, libraries, and collections, and the craftmanship of its historical buildings. In 2016, he shifted gears and moved to Western Maine, where he traded the exhaust fumes for fresh air, but never lost his sense of direction or humor.
Chris was a man of many passions. He could often be found on the golf course, perfecting his swing with the same precision he used to dodge Boston traffic. When he wasn't on the greens, he was likely in his garden, tending to his plants with a green thumb and a heart of gold. He was as thoughtful in his gardening as he was in conversation, always planting seeds of joy and knowledge.
A lover of music, Chris's taste ranged from the classics to the obscure, always ready with a song recommendation to suit any mood or moment. His passion for history was not just for the books he loved to devour but was also evident in the stories he shared, each one laced with his signature wit. Chris was a raconteur in the truest sense, his tales as rich and vibrant as the history he so adored.
Describing Chris is impossible; he was so many things. Funny, intelligent, generous... unflappable, even. But first and always, he was one of the kindest men to ever grace this world. He was the kind of guy who could light up a room with his intellect and keep it bright with his compassion. Those who knew him were lucky to bask in the warmth of his kindness and the brilliance of his mind.
Chris's legacy is carried on by those he loved most: his son, Brian John Defanski; his granddaughter, Abigail Christine Defanski, who was the apple of his eye; and his long-time companion, Jennie Anne (Trott Smith) Finley, who shared in his laughter and love of life. He was preceded in death by his mother, Gale M. (Daddario) Smith, who undoubtedly passed down her sharp wit, and his best friend, Adam Trott, with whom he's now sharing a laugh somewhere over the rainbow.
As we bid farewell to Chris, we remember a man who lived life in the driver's seat, navigating every twist and turn with humor and grace. He may have taken his final curtain call, but the stories, the laughter, and the memories will forever be etched in the hearts of those who had the pleasure of knowing him. Chris, here's to the ride of a lifetime.
