James C. Emerson III, 89, of Stoughton, MA and Sebastian, FL died on April 23, 2025, after a brief illness. Jim was preceded in death by his first wife, Rose (Gelber) Emerson and his second wife, Linda (Mars) Emerson.
A graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Northeastern University, Jim was an accomplished educator. He was a long-term professor at Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston, MA. One of Jim’s proudest moments was being inducted as a Cardinal at MIT and into the alumni Gray Society. He beamed proudly in his gray slacks and cardinal red blazer at his 50th reunion.
An ever curious and intellectual engineer, Jim spent much of his retirement life dabbling in all things electronic. He enjoyed describing the mechanics of many things and discussing world history and current events. He had a fascination with trains, automobiles, and the latest emerging technology of today. He was never seen without his gadgets and many tools. More than any other activity, Jim loved cycling. He enjoyed the mechanics of all types of bicycles, and it continued to be a great passion until his death. Jim was enthralled with designing bike routes, reminiscing of his past joyful experiences, including bicycling in New York City, and regularly traveling to work by bicycle through the streets of Boston.
He lived devoted to his first wife, Rose, even after her death, but soon became isolated and spent a great deal of time on his own. That changed for Jim when he met his second wife, Linda, at a support group and soon their lives transformed into the second chance life romance for both of them. Along with Linda came her four adult children with whom Jim bonded and spent much time at their homes. In 1998, Jim became a grandfather with the birth of the first of three boys who would know Jim as their beloved “Poppy.” Jim recounted that the bonding was his joy to hold babies and learn how to be a grandparent.
Jim is survived by his nephew, Robert Emerson, Jr., and his wife Patricia, of Lakeville, MA; his niece, Jill Mohan, of Reston, VA; his great nieces and nephews Kelly Emerson, of Lakeville, MA, Tara Emerson, of Lakeville, MA, James Emerson, of Lakeville, MA, Brian Emerson of Lakeville, MA, Anjali Mohan, of Reston, VA, and Abhi Mohan, of Reston, VA; his stepchildren, Sandra Lindsey and husband, Bob, of Mashpee, MA; Laura Niabi, of Mashpee, MA, John Lind and partner Sophie, of Melbourne, FL, and Paul Andrews and wife Deirdre, of Mashpee, MA; and his grandchildren Alex Westcott, of Mashpee, MA, Connor Westcott, of Mashpee, MA, and Logan Westcott, of Mashpee, MA.
James will be laid to rest in a private ceremony at Sandwich Town Cemetery.
