Robertine Smith Obituary

Robertine Amphy Smith, a beacon of warmth and generosity passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 27, 2025, in Kankakee, IL, at the age of 90. Born February 5, 1935, in Monroe, LA, to Tom Ampy and Ethel Mae Jones. Robertine’s life was a testament to the power of kindness and community spirit as she also serviced as a dedicated Foster Grandparent.


Robertine was the heart of her family, cherished by her children Elizabeth Grayson of Monroe, La, Linda Johnson, Kenneth (Tracy) Mosley, Robert Powell, and Harrison Mosley, all of Kankakee, IL. Her legacy includes a vibrant brood of 13 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and 8 great-great-grandchildren who will remember her nurturing love and joyful presence. Surviving also are her siblings Michael Coleman, Carl Amphy, and Perthina Hodo along with a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.


After dedicating herself to a life of service and care, Robertine did her nursing training at Kankakee Community College. She went on to provide comfort and companionship to many during her tenure at the American Nursing Home. Robertine's generous spirit extended into her faith as she served with devotion first at Rose of Sharon Church and at Zion Gate Baptist Church, having joined in 1969. She was an active participant in the Usher Ministry and the Mother's Ministry.


Her involvement with the Kankakee County United Ushers Nurses Alliance (KCUUNA) reflected her unwavering commitment to her profession and her community. Known for being friendly, generous, and spirited, Robertine's influence, and energy were unmistakable, touching lives far beyond her immediate circle.


Preceded in death by her parents, husband Robert Earl Smith whom she married on February 2, 1977, and children Terry, Danny Darline, Billy, and Katie, Robertine's warmth will linger in the hearts of those who knew and loved her. The world is undoubtedly brighter for her having been in it.
