Dennis L. Olenik, 87, passed away peacefully on April 27, 2025, at his home in Rockford, IL. Dennis was born in Chicago, IL, on July 31, 1937, to the parents of Bruno & Dorothy Olejnik. He was proceeded in death by his parents, and brother Ken A. Olenik. He is survived by his wife, Muriel Olenik; son, Keith Olenik of Chicago, IL; daughter, Cindi Johnson (Steve) of Palatine, IL; grandson, Brad Johnson (Belle); great-grandson, Jacob of TN, and grandson Tim Johnson (Libby), of MO.

Dennis graduated from Tilden Tech High School in Chicago, IL, in 1955. He attended Trinity College in Chicago, IL (1955-1957). He transferred to Northern Illinois University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education in 1960 and a Master of Arts in 1964. He also graduated from Rosary College with a Master of Arts in Library Science in 1972.

His teaching career included two years teaching sixth grade in Sycamore, Il, five years teaching high school history in Chenoa, IL, and 29 years in High School District 214 in Arlington Heights. This included one year as the assistant librarian at Elk Grove High School and 28 years as head librarian at John Hersey High School until retirement in June 1996.

During his time at JHHS, Dennis was a sponsor of the AFS (American Field Services) program and was the resident clergy for the Marriage and Family classes.

Dennis enjoyed tennis, golf, traveling, reading and especially being involved in ministries at his church. He sang in choir, helped with the Awana program, and after retirement served the church as the Assimilation Coordinator for several years greeting and welcoming people to the church.

A Celebration of Dennis’ life will be held at a later date.
