Mrs. Gail Vander Zwaag, age 88, of Spirit Lake, formerly of Hull, passed away on Tuesday, May 6, 2025, at Accura Healthcare of Milford.
A visitation with the family present will be held on Monday, May 12, from 5:00pm to 7:00pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Hull. There will be a graveside service on Tuesday, May 13, at 10:30am, at the Hope Cemetery in Hull, with the Rev. Jordan Warntjes officiating.
Eleanor Gail was born on April 22, 1937, in Rock Rapids, the daughter of Milton W. and Eleanor (Parks) Rockhill. She was raised on a farm near Larchwood and graduated from the Larchwood Public School. She then started working as a telephone operator in Sheldon. While “cruising” the streets of Sheldon, she met the love of her life.
On September 6, 1958, she was united in marriage to Glen Truman Vander Zwaag, in Larchwood. They made their home in Hull, where they were members of the First Reformed Church and Gail enjoyed being a choir director at the church. She also volunteered at the election polls, and as a Girl Scout Leader. Gail liked to spend time reading and quilting, as well as sewing, specifically her daughter’s and grandchildren’s Halloween costumes. Glen and Gail enjoyed going camping with their family and friends, traveling around the world, and attending theater productions and concerts. In 2010, they moved to the Keelson Harbour Assisted Living Community in Spirit Lake, where they were members of the Spirit Lake Methodist Church. Glen passed away on October 25, 2010, after more than 52 years of marriage.
Survivors include her five daughters and their spouses, Yvonne and Bob Blohm, of Reinbeck; Lora and Harry Vander Pol, of Orange City; Cindy and Mark Warntjes, of Boyden; Lisa and Rodney Bakker, of Spirit Lake; and Amanda and Justin Crane, of Lee’s Summit, Missouri; fourteen grandchildren, Leslie, and her husband, Rob Michael; John Blohm, and his wife, Jessie; Kyle Blohm, and his wife, Megan; Matthew Vander Pol, and his wife, Terri; Brooke, and her husband, Adam Brinkmeier; Brittney, and her husband, Dave Meyer; Taylor Warntjes, and his wife, Heather; Jordan Warntjes, and his wife, Michelle; Blake Warntjes; Sheila Neff; Andrea, and her husband, Justin Lee; Danielle, and her husband, Logan Fischer; Talan Crane; and Landon Crane; 27 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; two sisters, Jane Larimore; and Lori, and her husband, W.N. Gray; five brothers, Owen Rockhill, and his wife, Paula; Ronald Rockhill, and his wife, Cindy; Wendell Rockhill; Rex Rockhill, and his wife, Pam; and Randy Rockhill; a sister-in-law, Harriet Vander Zwaag; a brother-in-law, Claude Vander Zwaag; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Mariah Warntjes; a sister and her husband, Connie and Victor Kauzlarich; a brother, Gary Rockhill; three sisters-in-law, Ruby Rockhill; Betty Vander Zwaag; and Judy, and her husband, Cliff Van Schepen; and two brothers-in-law, Ray Larimore and Henry Vander Zwaag.
Memorials will be given to the American Heart Association and the Alzheimer’s Association.
