Delores Downs Randolph, born on April 8, 1924, in Kansas City, MO, to James Madison Downs and Elon Harriford Downs, was a beacon of love, resilience, and devotion throughout her remarkable 101 years. The second daughter in a family of five, Delores was preceded in death by both of her parents, her beloved sisters Juanita Burrell, Jimmie McReynolds, and Bobbie Hilliard. Her surviving sister, Elon Hopkins, continues to cherish her memory.
A Loving Marriage and Legacy
Delores and Carl D. Randolph were married for 56 years until his passing in 1997. They became parents to four children: the late Carl Jr., the late James, Delores Jones (Maceo), and Janet Randolph. Claudette & Leonard Briggs and Janice Hobson Randolph are also cherished children.
Her devotion to her family and community was reflected not only in her personal relationships but also in her professional and social endeavors, where she consistently demonstrated a commitment to excellence and service. Delores balanced her roles as a mother, wife, and community leader with grace, offering inspiration to those around her through her resilience and unwavering faith. Her legacy includes twelve grandchildren—Keith (Julie), Carl III, Alexandra (Seth), Dennis (Somporntip), Leighan, Carla (Elle), Marla (Eric), Deanna (LaDale), Stephen, Janene, Jenifer (Chet), and the late Jeffrey—and extends further to 14 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren. Delores also leaves a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives that were blessed by her life.
Faith and Community
Delores joined St. Luke AME Church in 1941 and served as a Stewardess and Mother until its closure in 2014, demonstrating her strong faith and commitment to her community. Later, she chose to join Mount Carmel Church of God In Christ, where she was a member until her death. She was also affiliated with the Alice M Browne Order of the Eastern Star for over 50 years, serving as Worthy Matron (President), embodying values of service and sisterhood.
Delores’ impact radiated far beyond her immediate family and church, reaching into the hearts of friends, neighbors, and countless individuals who were touched by her boundless compassion. Her life was a testament to the power of quiet strength, exemplified in her ability to find beauty and purpose in even the most ordinary aspects of life. Whether offering a listening ear, opening her home to someone in need, or sharing her wisdom and faith, Delores remained a constant source of light and comfort to all who sought her counsel. Her life, rich with love and service, is a legacy that will continue to inspire long after her physical presence has passed, reminding everyone of the profound impact of a life lived with grace, purpose, and an unwavering dedication to others.
Professional Brilliance and Mentorship
After her children entered school, Delores pursued cosmetology and quickly became an exceptional beautician, renowned for her skill and professionalism. She was a proud member of the KCK Black Beauticians Association and the Kansas State Cosmetology Association, serving four terms as President. Her leadership and expertise made her a mentor to innumerable aspiring beauticians, further cementing her influence and compassion. Delores also had many loyal customers, some of them close enough to be considered family.
Her life was a tapestry woven with threads of love, dedication, and resilience, leaving an indelible mark on everyone she encountered. Delores was a woman of quiet strength and profound grace, whose influence extended far beyond her family and community. She had a unique ability to build and nurture relationships, effortlessly becoming the anchor in the lives of those she held dear. A Grandmother’s Love
Delores embodied the role of a loving and doting grandmother, always available to care for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The New Year’s Eve gatherings for grandchildren were legendary, becoming cherished traditions that her family fondly recalls even today. Her grace and warmth as a caregiver extended far beyond her family, touching everyone fortunate enough to know her.
A Life of Caregiving
Delores was the definition of selflessness, providing in-home care to her mother, sister, mother-in-law, two uncles, husband, Carl Sr., eldest son, Carl Jr., and even a church member. Her home was a sanctuary where displaced family members could find refuge, a testament to her unwavering generosity and compassion.
Final Years with Love and Devotion
Since becoming immobilized in 2023, Delores received exceptional care from Irma Agosto, whom her daughters lovingly adopted as another sister, as well as Nickie Cooperwood. Her grandson, Stephen Jones, was her live-in companion and caregiver for 13 years, supported by grandsons Carl Randolph III and Elijah Randolph. Their collective love and care ensured that Delores’ final years were filled with comfort and dignity.
A Heavenly Journey
On April 26, 2025, Delores Downs Randolph departed this world for her heavenly journey, leaving behind an unparalleled legacy of love, care, and generosity.
