John Richard "Dick" Hart Sr. Obituary

John Richard “Dick” Hart, 91, passed away on April 27, 2025, in Mansfield, Ohio after a short illness.


Born on October 6, 1933, Dick grew up in Skidmore, Missouri, where he graduated from Skidmore High School. He went on to serve as a Marine Sergeant during the Korean War from 1951 to 1954, and returned home to attend Drury College in Springfield, Missouri. earning a degree in Geology. Dick carried his dedication and discipline into a long and successful career as a self-employed petroleum geologist.


Dick moved his family to Marion in 1963 where he was an active figure in Ohio’s oil and gas industry for 60 years. He worked throughout Ohio, but particularly in Morrow County. His work left a lasting impact on the region and earned him respect among his peers.


Dick was a devoted family man who loved fishing at his place on Candlewood Lake. Known for his hard work, sharp wit, and appreciation for a good joke and a cold beer, he brought joy and laughter to those around him.


He is survived by his beloved wife of 68 years Mary Ellen Hart; daughter Debi Hart and her husband Frederik Bleeker of the Netherlands and grandsons Rory Bleeker and Scott Hart; son John Hart and his wife Sheila Hart of Lexington, Ohio; granddaughters Heather (Dustin) Boyce and Sydney (Tyler) George; and great-grandchildren River and Everest George.


Dick was preceded in death by his parents John E. and Maud (Taylor) Hart; brothers JW and Don Hart; and sister Doris Lewis.


Calling hours will be held at Snyder Funeral Homes, Denzer Chapel, 360 E. Center St., Marion, Ohio, on Thursday, May 8, 2025, from 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. He was a longtime member of First Presbyterian Church in Marion.


In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society or a charity of your choice.


Dick's life was one of purpose, humor, and love may his memory bring comfort to all who knew him.
